Kicked out of doctors surgery

I have been a patient of the same surgery for the last 46 years, from the day i was born, for 25 of those years i have been outside the catchment area for new patients...however, recently my last doctor (2nd 1 i've had in my life) has retired. A month in and the new doctor is kicking me out because i am 2 miles outside the catchment area (same as the last 25 yrs). My mum, dad, 3 of my brothers, sister in law, all still at this surgery - i have gynae issues going back 27 yrs, my 1st brush with cervical cancer when i was 17, i've had several brushes since then - i don't want to change to a new surgery that knows nothing about me or my family history!

As i am all too aware from the past, family history n your GP being able to make connections, makes a massive difference. About 10 yrs ago, me n 1 of my brothers were having the same issues with our stomachs, during 1 appointment when i was getting test results back, my GP said to me, your Darren's sister, aren't u, my answer, 'yes i am', her reply was ' your results show, you have......can you please tell Darren to come in for the same tests,' turned out he had same as me - if it wasn't for the family connection, it coulda took a lot longer to work out what was wrong with him.

My current surgery is a village surgery but it is quite big, non the less, i if i have to move, its to a town surgery, where you never see the same GP twice, i know this because 1 of my brothers made this mistake and he is never done complaining about not being able to get an appointment, never sees the same GP, booked up for 2 weeks at a time, etc etc, definitely not what i want with my past medical history. Can somebody please help me and tell me how, without having to move house, can i stop them kicking me out? Any suggestions at all will be appreciated, thank you

Your medical records would go with you, so moving surgeries doesn't matter. Even if you stay at the same surgery, the doctors will change! They have thousands of patients, so of course they don't "know you"..... we don't live in some cosy, twee world any more. You're just a number (as we all are) - you can be seen anywhere.

The Gp has retired anyway so the new gp at your surgery won't know your history either.

Kindly as I can OP, your medical history is not extraordinary. Cervical cancer is fairly routine and it is not above the ability of a GP to deal with.

I'd just move. Tbh I'd rather my whole family weren't registered at my GP due to privacy of which there appear to be issues.

A similar thing happened at my village surgery, people outwith the catchment area were getting letters asking them to move surgeries but it was a request and not enforceable.

I'm in Scotland so don't know if the same rules apply here.

It can be enforced here too if the surgery are clamping down on people out of the area. My surgery doesn't give you an option, if you move, you're told to register at the appropriate surgery for your address

Maybe your surgery was trying the softly approach first 😁

You're being very melodramatic, you haven't been kicked out, you just live outside their catchment area. It's a policy they have to follow or they'd have more patients than they can cope with. The family connection is actually really inappropriate, they shouldn't ever discuss medical issues of anyone else. Your notes move electronically when you change surgeries, I've been registered with probably 20 surgeries as have moved around a lot. Never caused an issue, but I rarely go to the GP. Ours is all on e-consult now anyway, it's great, everything sorted quickly via message or phone call.

This happened to me , so I told them I live back at my old address , not ideal but everything is communicated via email and online so it works for me, I didn't want to change to where I live now as it not a great surgery.

Hopefully you wont need referring to hospital or need a visit

As others said you could appeal the decision by writing to the practice manager.
Don't take it personally though, they're probably trying to keep up their standards by limiting number of patients and being strict.
Any GP will have access to your medical records though, they don't need to know you personally for that .

This happened to us. They explained there had been so many new houses built their numbers had just gone up too much for out of area patients

Exactly same here. A load of new houses went up and I was now outside my GPs catchment and would have to register with a different surgery. I was so ridiculously upset. Been with this surgery for 44 years.

Two years later now and the new surgery is fine, and I realise I was a bit daft to have been almost in tears with the situation. It felt like a loss! It won't feel so bad OP if you just give it time.

The chances of getting registered with a new doctor in my local area n getting an appointment is slim - my local practice is massively overrun n has been for years.

Think I'll talk to my dad and change my address back to his.

Thank you for all your comments.

You've not been 'kicked out' you've moved out of their catchment area. They're perfectly entitled to ask you to register elsewhere.

Our surgery does it too. The doctors can barely cope with the number of patients actually in their catchment area without taking on more

You can't stop them, you can ask them to let you stay but it's probably unlikely they will. They have catchment areas for a reason

This.
