So much bleeding and pain - 5 days post hysteroscopy, biopsy and coil fitting

OvertiredandConfused · 11/08/2024 13:02

At the beginning of the week, I had a hysteroscopy and biopsy due to post menopausal bleeding. Also agreed to have the mirena coil fitted to help manage the bleeding.

Had previously been on norethisterone for about a year and then off for about 6 to 8 months with no bleeding. So a technical diagnosis of postmenopausal has been slightly challenging, but most likely. I’m 54.

Despite usually being pretty stoic, I am in agony. Over-the-counter painkillers are not really having much impact and the bleeding is off the scale. Going through a couple of overnight pads in less than an hour and have already had to change my clothing four times today. Every time I move, I just flood.

When I asked what to expect, I was told it can take up to 3 months to settle. Currently have an appointment to get the results in a fortnight but consultant did say she’d let me know sooner if possible.

At the moment, I can’t leave the house. Am I missing something? Any advice? I have just found some tranexamic acid left from a couple of years ago so I’ve taken a dose of that in desperation.

I would ring 111 for advice, particularly if you weren't bleeding that much before the procedure.

I've had a hysteroscopy and a coil fitted, not at the same time, neither left that amount of bleeding.

OvertiredandConfused · 11/08/2024 13:43

We’ve got some friends (fortunately very good friends who won’t react to me sitting on a towel) coming round for food shortly. If I’m no better when they’ve gone, I will call 111 I think. That might give the TXA chance to work as well.

I’ve only been like this once before, and that was when I was first given TXA and norethisterone.

I've not had any of these procedures, but that sounds like an abnormal amount of blood loss, and I would think it could make you quite poorly if it continues.

I'd definitely seek medical help if there's no improvement within the next few hours.

You also need to be given some stronger pain relief.

I'm sorry you're going through this. It's bloody rubbish.

KnittingKnewbie · 11/08/2024 13:50

I would be concerned they have perforated something. I'd go to the hospital

OvertiredandConfused · 11/08/2024 17:59

So I’m still flooding. Had to send out for more sanitary supplies. Thinking I may need to contact 111

Op that doesn't sound right at all that's way too much bleeding please seek medical help

PoopedAndScooped · 11/08/2024 18:01

Dont bother with 111
Go to A&E now

NorthernDancer · 11/08/2024 18:02

Sorry OP, but that's an A&E job. Tonight, not "I'll wait until the morning and see if gets any better."

Startingagainandagain · 11/08/2024 18:05

I would go to hospital.

I had a biopsy done to try to find the cause of heavy periods/bleeding between periods when I was about 45 and they install the mirena coil at the same time.

I started having awful pain/contractions two days after the procedure. I ended up going to A&E.

It was my body rejecting the coil and trying to eject it with contractions. It literally fell out in the middle of a huge blood clot when I was in the A&E cubicle...

YerMaRubsPlumsAtTheBackOfAldi · 11/08/2024 18:06

2 pads in less than an hour - a and e. Please go sooner rather than waiting for 111.

hopeishere · 11/08/2024 18:15

If you're menopausal ie in menopause why are they fitting a coil?

If you're menopausal ie in menopause why are they fitting a coil?

Probably for the bleeding and it can be used for the hormones not just for contraception

If you're menopausal ie in menopause why are they fitting a coil?

It's as part of HRT, the progesterone part

Movinghouseatlast · 11/08/2024 18:20

I had a hysteroscopy and coill fitting and the bleeding stopped after around 2 hours. I think I'd go to a and e- that's what the letter I was given afterwards said to do if bleeding was very heavy.

almondflake · 11/08/2024 18:27

I'd get someone to take you to a&e I had a hysteroscopy before Christmas and there was only slight bleeding and discomfort , i didn't have a coil fitted though .
I would be very concerned about the amount of bleeding and pain that you're in .
Go to hospital xxxx good luck .

OvertiredandConfused · 11/08/2024 19:30

I followed the advice and spoken to the ward where I had the procedure. They are going to call me back shortly.

If they tell me I need to go to A&E then I will.

I’m in A&E. Original hospital said 111. Then 111 got the OOH nurse to call and she sent me to A&E. Triaged quickly and bloods done. Now waiting for gynae consult. Flow slightly less but pain worse. It’s busy so expect to be here a while.

Thank god you are getting checked hope all is ok keep us updated Op

DramaAlpaca · 11/08/2024 23:38

Glad you're getting checked out. I had exactly the same procedures as you recently for the same reason, but had no bleeding or pain afterwards at all. Hope nothing's gone wrong and you're OK. You've done the right thing going in.

OvertiredandConfused · 12/08/2024 00:32

Blood tests and examination all okay so I can go home. On TXA until bleeding stops and norethisterone 5mg 3 x daily again for at least 10 days.

Did stress I was right to go in and that the level of blood loss needs to be managed (but isn’t an indicator of anything sinister).

OP posts:
almondflake · 12/08/2024 18:52

So glad it's nothing sinister @OvertiredandConfused , I hope you're feeling better today and the pain is less . The procedure is absolutely awful in itself with out the side effects you've suffered 💐

I has that too and a coil fitted. I bled like that still on the coil until it came out in a clot.

I was put on northisterone afterwards and had a hysterectomy as I had adenomyosis.

I’m pretty sure that I want to have a hysterectomy, but I know I need to wait until I’ve got the results of the tests last week
