Mirena removal

Hi everyone,

My Mirena coil was due to be removed in April 2023, having been in for seven years. I'm 57 now and had it put in to help with my (then) heavy periods. It worked beautifully and I've had no periods since April 2016. Fab 😀

To cut a long story short, the nurse at my surgery couldn't get it out. The specialist surgery couldn't get it out and broke the strings trying 😮

I've been on the waiting list and my appointment for a hysteroscopy is this Wednesday afternoon. I just wondered if anyone has had any experience of this procedure for a coil removal. I'm basically trying to establish how it's going to be on a the pain/discomfort scale. I realise it may not be a good idea to ask but .... I was just hoping for some reassurance 😚

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help 😘

If it is a hospital clinic they have more specialist chairs than a sexual health clinic or doctors.

I was a whimp and that the coil in by ga (personally never felt the strings myself, emergency gynae said only one string seen in March, so on my previous to last attempt the gum clinic mentioned they could involve a scan and then a special tool. Decided it was better left to a hospital so 15 minutes in the hospital’s hysteroscopy clinic it was out with pretty much the least fuss. (I did hear the strings were slippery but they managed to remove) really was over before I knew it. Everyone was lovely and I didn’t go into a bleed until 2 days later. I just bleed throughout the coil so was deluding myself I’d never have anything!

I mean - if they can get a baby out which is gazillion times bigger, I think they will be able to get this out without issue! Even if they have to poke up it will be quick and you could ask them to use numbing gel xx

I had the same issue. I ended up having it removed (and a new one in) under GA. Are they not doing yours under GA?

My strings had gone up into my uterus. So I had to have it removed at a special appointment. It was painless and straightforward.

Good morning and thank you so much for your replies. I feel a bit better now ☺️

I'm not going under GA on Wednesday. They're going to try and remove it without, possibly with forceps.

I remember it going in and it was a bit tricky to get in place. That's due to me having fibroids, which I suspect are what's preventing it coming out.

Logically, yes; they can get a baby out so this should be no issue 🙂 I'm probably just being a tad nesh. Although, in my defence, I've never had a baby, so I don't have anything as a benchmark ☺️

Anyway, thank you. I'll put my big girl pants on and, come Wednesday evening, it'll be sorted 🥰

ETA Yes, I'm at a large city hospital 🙂
