Still have milk 1 year after stopping BF

Just wondering if anyone could share their experience of galactorrhea and if it's worth going to the GP for? I stopped BF a little over a year ago and still have milk (I don't leak but if u squeeze to check its still there). Some things that think I might need to go to the GP are; Hormonal acne (I'm in my 30s for goodness sake!) and horrendous periods for the last 6 months especially impacting on my mental health as well as generally picking up lots of virus' (although this could be due to having young kids)....

I can still squeeze a bit out, and experience what feels like 'let down' 13 years after I stopped feeding! Youngest is 15 now.
I have no idea of ots something to worry about. But if you're concerned, add it to the list when you next see GP.

How long did you bf for?

I'm pretty sure I have milk after stopping bf six months ago. It I fed two children over the course of 4 years back to back.
I read it can sometimes take years to stop!
I also have hormonal acne and have noticed my periods being a lot more heavy days 1-3 than they ever have been.
Virus...yup. pretty sure it is from having kids.

I'm feeling exhausted that I'm going to ask my GP to check my blood.

I just tried to ‘squeeze some out’ 🤷‍♀️, and to my shock I can! Stopped breastfeeding 1.5 years ago, no idea if this is normal. Its actually quite cool 😂

Turophilic · 03/08/2024 23:17

It took years.

Also, my periods have gone weird since stopping - much worse PMT and hormonal tiredness and less regular. Thought it was perimenopause.

I am starting to think mine is peri but maybe it isn't!!

No harm with having a chat with your GP but it's not unusual. Dr Jack Newman attempted a study once and women were still producing milk for years after, if I remember correctly it was abondoned in the end because there wasn't any way to tell if the checking for milk at regular intervals was prolonging it or not.

I can still get a bit on one side (the side that was the better producer) if I give it at squeeze and I stopped 6ish yrs ago

I haven’t bf for 7 years - though I did almost continually feed for 7 years - all my kids stopped when I was pregnant and had a couple months break before the next one. I haven’t tried to squeeze any out, but still some there as I get small stains on white bras. I recon if I put a pump on for a few days I’d have a supply in no time 😂

It is worth going to your GP to check up. I did when I was still able to squeeze out a bit about 18 months after I stopped bf because I was really worried about it. GP checked my breasts and asked me some questions and then said it’s actually quite common and nothing to worry about. It’s now been 3 years since I stopped and I can still express a little bit! I also got referred to a gynaecologist at the time my cycle had gone haywire. Turned out to be perimenopause 🤷‍♀️ I had quite bad acne flares at the time as well but they’ve since calmed down a lot so that’s something 😅
If you get frequent headaches or have problems with your vision, definitely get checked out asap regarding the lactation but it’s worth a check up in any case xx

It took several years for mine to stop completely.

I never worried about it. I think in the non-breastfeeding but milk having years it only bothered me once when I had a lightly clogged duct. I just expressed a tiny bit in the shower and the problem was solved.

never occurred to me to worry about it.

I still could after 20 years. I didn't even try until lock down when a friend who couldn't breast feed had a baby and was afraid of lack of formula feed. I started expressing and freeing it as a back up for her

Hoglet70 · 04/08/2024 10:43

Yep, I could squeeze some out for years. When I mentioned it to the Doctor she told me to tell my DH to leave them alone as fiddling with your boobs just encourages it to keep on going. Obviously I ignored her.
