Should I take norethisterone?

I'm going on holiday in August and typically the start of my holiday will coincide with when my period is due. I usually bleed for 7 days meaning that I will be bleeding for 7 out of the 9 days that I am away. My periods are very heavy too with clots and I get poorly with these every month and I am prescribed mefanamic acid to try and deal with the pain they cause me each month. I am therefore thinking about taking Norethisterone to delay my period. I've googled this and it looks like I can now buy over the counter but I wanted to hear from anyone who had taken it to delay their period to see if it actually works in delaying heavy periods and also if it gave you any side effects? Thank you 😊

I couldn’t get this due to my BMI. But I got provera instead. And it was great. No side effects and no period

It worked very well for me when I had periods. I used it several times and it was quite a revelation discovering it existed! Wished I’d heard about it years ago.
I think it can affect mood but never found it that way.

I've used it for practically every holiday since I was around 12 years old, even if my period wasn't due just because I don't trust my body not to screw me over.

If I remember correctly, you start taking it before your period is due, take one tablet 3 times a day and once you stop taking it, your period will arrive 1-3 days later. I've never had any issues or side effects from it, period is never any heavier or having more cramps. Honestly I'd recommend it to any woman who wanted to try it.

I wasn't aware you could buy it OTC though, I've always just got a prescription from my GP. Good to know!

How do you normally react to progesterone? Have you had side effects from hormonal contraception?

Lots of people are fine on it, but i felt like i had raging PMT the whole time. I felt crap. Progesterone doesnt agree with me at all

dementedpixie · 21/07/2024 17:11

I bought mine from the Pharmica website
Worked fine and period arrived 3 days after stopping it

Cudz · 21/07/2024 17:12

@Branleuse I haven't taken any contraception for decades so I have no idea how I'll react to be honest. Will pop into pharmacy tomorrow to speak to them and get their advice x

It's worked fine for me, I've always delayed the period before the one due on holiday if that makes sense, so I'm not actually having to take it whilst away just in case there are side effects.

Have you ever tried tranexamic acid, it changed my life with periods by really lessening the flow to very little and you can take it every month. I got it from boots a few years back before going on our honeymoon then the gp prescribed it since.

Cudz · 21/07/2024 19:57

@TerrysOrangeScot I've heard of it but my gp surgery is useless and I'm never able to get an appointment with them so they would only prescribe mefanamic acid based on my econsult as that doesn't require a physical check to prescribe!

I got it through super drug online. have used it for a few holidays due to poor timing and only side effect for me personally was bloating (though it could have been the all inclusive food and drink!). Have then always resumed cycle a few days after finishing
