Traumatised from coil fitting but do I get it again ?

So due to me not being able to take the combination pill or anything with oestrogen and the progesterone only pill made me spot consistently I choose to have a coil fitted a few years ago before I had a baby . I went with the Mirena which I now realise maybe wasn't the best choose for someone who hadn't had children ? I can honestly say for me it was worse than child birth I am absolutely terrified to get it again however I'm 7 weeks PP and will need contraception and I think it's probably my only option , do you think k now that I've had a baby it will hurt as much as it did the first time ? I could barely walk after and almost passed out during the insertion I don't know if I can do it again it was horrific.

My advice is to ask about alternative brands. There is one called Jaydess, it's smaller. Also make sure they use a small speculum. Good luck.

It affects everyone differently so you won’t know until you try sadly. Are condoms an option so that it doesn’t always fall to you?

They are but honestly I just had a baby I really really don't want to take the risk couldn't cope getting pregnant again so soon

They say it's easier for those who have given birth

understatedeleganza · 20/07/2024 18:12

Vasectomy?

Blarn · 20/07/2024 18:14

I found having a child fitted at aged 22ish awful. So much pain, I honesty would never, ever have done it hadI known. Had one 4 months post parturition with dd2 and didn't even realise it had been done, I thought they were still prepping! Had a smear done at the same time!

Can't guarentee it will be better but your cervix will be a little wider so stands a chance you will find it easier.

I just had a copper coil fitted a few days ago. I chose it because it doesn't have any hormones and is still considered very effective. Went for the smaller, 5-year one due to size and pain concerns. I've never had children and although it was painful, it was definitely bearable. I had a little pain for the rest of the day but nothing since.

Honestly, postpartum I didn't notice it going in!

Diazepam. Makes a world of a difference. Talk to the GP and ask them to prescribe it for you to take before the procedure.

I'm on my 3rd Mirena coil. The first two times were agony so I literally feel your pain. The last time the doctor was amazing and it was very quick and far less painful, but I was sick when I got home. For me the pros outweigh the cons as it's a few hours of misery (ie feeling ill after it's inserted), for 5 years of hassle free contraception and no periods (I haven't had children).

HillBillieEilish · 20/07/2024 19:30

Not really any advice but I had a very similar experience and was offered to have another whilst having laparoscopic surgery and even under GA, still declined. It's simply not worth it to me to go through it again.

I will be in the same position as you in a year or so due to my age so really do feel your pain.

Gladespade · 20/07/2024 19:35

I know how you feel. I had it after two kids, it was exactly as you describe - horrific.
im due to have it changed and I have diazepam and I’m also going to take an anti-spasmodic. My doctors don’t actually do the coil anymore so I’m on a long wait for gynecology but that’s another story.

Figment1982 · 20/07/2024 19:42

So I was the same as you.. was virtually a virgin when I had my first one fitted and it was the most horrendous experience of my life. First attempt failed, had to go back, second time went into what I now realised was some kind of shock response.

i gave birth via induction which took several days to work and then an epidural which kept falling out. And it was still less traumatic than the coil fitting.

I then used condoms for 4 years as I was so terrified of having another one out in. Finally went and did it.. and the experience was totally different. Clearly not enjoyable, but marginally more uncomfortable than a smear test. It was a totally different experience.

The only difference however with the second one was that I had spotting for a good 4 months after insertion, including one dreadful day where I had massive flooding . However, been in a year now and it’s great, extremely light periods (whereas the first time around they didn’t really change)

UngratefulOldCabbage · 20/07/2024 19:44

I had two coils - one before and one after childbirth. Both were horrendous and removed within weeks due to pain. I now cannot use the pill due to other issues. I'm using the Caya diaphragm. Got mine from Amazon after lots of research. All good so far!

I think everyone has different experiences and because you just had a baby you might feel less pain. I had Mirena after my third child and was not painful putting in but couldn’t agree with my body and went on to have 5 year copper coil which was fine too. But a 6 weeks ago I opted to have a 10 years copper coil and I have 4 children it wasn’t to bad fitting and it’s been fine until I started my first period on it and it’s been awful painful period pain and very heavy bleeding and it feels like it has moved.

Edited

The heavy periods is why I've steered away from the cooper coil anyone I know that had it suffered terribly where as with the Mirena my period went away altogether

My most recent one was a female gp and she applied local anaesthetic gel first - was quick, easy and straightforward, very different to previous...

Pallisers · 20/07/2024 21:27

I've had 3 mirenas put in. after I had given birth. 2 were absolutely fine. The third was horrendous but I think it was because I wasn't on my period and the obgyn was a locum and didn't really know what she was doing - the nurse apologised to me after. she put it in wrong too so it slipped from its place after a few months and I had to have it taken out and another one put in.

Maybe ask at your GP for someone who puts in a lot of them - it really makes a difference.

I chose the person who put mine in because she was the most experienced and did the most. I was initially offered a trainee and was too scared for him but the lady who did it took zero care and just shoved it in. Even her measuring was brutal.
