Ovarian Cysts

Yesterday I went for scans on my pelvis and the doctor has text me this afternoon confirming I have cysts on both ovaries and I will be referred to the gynaecology dept at my local hospital.

There was no further information, the scans came back very quickly as I was told I would have to wait for at least 10 days so a bit worried about how quick this has happened. Any idea what will happen at the appointment, will it be scanning and checking the size of them etc? I would call the doctors to get more info from her but can never get through. Thanks

I had a transvaginal ultrasound and a regular ultrasound. I had one cyst, which was 5 cm. At a follow-up appointment, it had disappeared. No further action was required.

It's good that you have been referred.

I had an ov. cyst diagnosed 15 months ago. It was giving me problems - pain, bloating, lots of little infections that would come and go. I was called in for a second scan 3 months later and then offered the choice of doing nothing or removing the ovary (I'm 60 and chose the latter. Problem solved. )

But they may remove it via a cut in your belly button or they may choose to drain it if it is just fluid. I imagine you are younger.

Once the decision was taken, it was quick, another 10 day wait.

@Meadowfinch thanks for replying, I'm 49 and peri menopausal, I've been getting pain for the last month and one night in particular it was quite bad, honestly thought it was just the menopause so the doctors suggest a scan just to check. I hope the wait isn't isn't too long and I can get it sorted

I had a transvaginal ultrasound and a regular ultrasound for a cervical cyst they also found an ovarian cyst during this had a CA125 blood test as it was normal no further action.

OP, There are different kinds of 'cysts'. Most are fluid and they can come and go. They occur as part of the natural cycle although some can be problematic and need draining.

I also had an ovarian dermoid when I was 32. That's a cyst made up of different sorts of tissue, that can be really nasty, grow out of control, tort (twist) and need dealing with surgically.

That's why I am pleased you've been referred. My gp at the time insisted I had IBS, refused to refer me and I ended up as an emergency admission after collapsing in the street, a week in women's surgical and 6 weeks off work.

That won't happen to you. They'll deal with it promptly and you'll be fine. You'll probably end up as a day case, with a tiny scar in your belly button that won't show at all. Good luck.

@Iloveeverycat what is a CA125 blood test? Thanks

This blood test checks for raised levels of a protein called CA125. It is normal to have some CA125 in the blood. But the levels may be higher due to ovarian cancer. So I had the scan then the blood test if the blood test was high I would have then been referred gynaecology.

@Meadowfinch sorry to hear you had such a bad time of it!

Theyve probably measured them already at the scan, theyll probably give you advice now at the gyno what to try and do probably offer birth control or surgery..depends on the size and all! Probably will keep an eye on them etc
