Another cervical smear / colposcopy / cancer post...

I've been having smears regularly since I was 16 (i'm 50 now), soon after meeting my husband (I was late 30s) I had an irregular result, so had a call back but the next one was fine. Three years ago I had an irregular result, so had to go back for a repeat smear last year, and this year on Monday, I had another repeat one (as they are monitoring the dodgy cells), anyway tonight just as I was dishing up dinner I receive a text saying I have to go for a coloscopy on the 16th.

I've had THE most stressful last 6 months, and i'm not surprised the stress has had an impact on my health.

I'm really worried. The results seem to have come back very quick and surely this means something dodgy has been brewing for at least 3/4 years maybe closer to 20.

I've been lifting a lot of weights lately and have some aches and pains - but now i'm thinking maybe they were something else.

thoughts?

I was in a similar situation. I had yearly smears and every time there would be HPV present. I had a few colposcopies but everything was okay. Eventually I was seen by a number of consultants and they explained that they are realising some people can't clear it from their system so will have repeated results. They have put me back on 3 yearly smears despite HPV still being present so hopefully yours is nothing to worry about either.

I had my appointment today. They did the colposcopy and then did a loop excision. They have sent the cells off for investigation but said once the cells were removed all looked healthy and fine so not to be worried. If all is ok I'll have another smear in 6 months. She said bleeding could last 4-6 weeks. Wasn't pleasant but nothing too bad

I think because most people's bodies fight off HPV and it goes away, once you're older though your body struggles to kill HPV off.

How did your appointment go??

hello - it was fine, I was so nervous. The Dr took me into a room initially and explained what she was going to do, she said i'd been called back because this was year 3 of HPV cells, but there was no signs in those samples of anything else so she wasn't expecting to see anything bad. I made the two nurses in there talk to me about all sorts (mainly my food allergies and theirs), I was a bit tearful anyway as i'd had two failed rounds of IVF (many years ago now), and walking through the maternity / gynae section with all the pregnant ladies was a bit :/
Anyway the Dr had a good look and said there was nothing to worry about, and my next smear is in 3 years time, as my body seems to be keeping the HPV in control.

I had an abnormal smear in 2020 I was only notified when a letter came with a booked colposcoy appointment. Was not pleased no one told me.

I had high grade HPV and CIN2. As lockdown was starting I opted to watch and wait. I was on an annual colposcopy pathway now. Consultant was supportive as new stretch came out saying it can naturally reverse.

I now have no abnormal cells and HPV gone.

Glad you got on ok. The nurses and doctors are unbelievably wonderful aren't they. We talked about cats!!
