uti, thrush or something else...

Started a thread last week when I was away on holiday overseas as I had what appeared to be a UTI - lots of pain and burning on urination. Saw a pharmacist in Italy who sold me some cranberry d-mannose sachet things which were OK and started to feel a bit better. But it's never really gone completely and a week later i'm still suffering. Main symptoms are pain/burning in the nether regions which feels like thrush but it's been a long time since I had thrush. Not noticed much of a discharge but i'm a menopausal woman who has had a hysterectomy anyway.

I have a dull ache low down in my pelvis, not really noticed smelly/cloudy urine and have been drinking more water than i've ever drunk in my life. The d-mannose seems to be giving me diarrhoea too.

Urgh. Have just ordered a course of antibiotics online as I am on jury duty all this week and getting an appointment with my GP is impossible.

Your pharmacist can give you a 3 day course of antibiotics over the counter without a prescription. You can also buy an oral pill and pessary for thrush, and a pessary for bacterial vaginosis. In fact I think Boots does a pessary that treats both BV and thrush at the same time. If you’ve tried all three and got no relief then you’ll need tests to identify the cause.

Thrush pessary more effective than the capsule option?

I'd try the oral thrush pill, I had identical symptoms to you, that I could work out were thrush or uti (didn't have usual thrush symptoms though) but the pill really worked, I'm in menopause too

What is this pessary called?
How do you order antibiotics online?

Possibly GTM - genito-urinary syndrome of menopause, simple treatment is vaginal estrogen cream. There is very little uptake of estrogen into the body's system via the vaginal tissues, it only has a local effect.

Sorry, that should be GSM.

If it is thrush, though, a Diflucan oral pill is the only thing that would clear up mine, and if UTI, then antibiotics. Hope you get some relief.

It’s just a thrush pessary. The active ingredient is clotrimazole. I’ve found the unbranded ones from the pharmacy work better for me than the branded Canesten ones. Or if you want one to treat BV as well, it’s called Boots Dual Action Thrush & BV.

I don’t know how you order antibiotics online, most pharmacies just dish them out if you turn up with UTI symptoms.

You can take both together. The pill you swallow and the pessary you put inside.

Sometimes one or the other seems to work better, there’s no logic to it! I’ve had a pessary fail to fix thrush but then the oral pill has worked, and I’ve had pessaries fail but the oral pill has worked.

I usually try the pessary first because it has less side effects. If that doesn’t work I reluctantly take the oral pill (which gives me the runs for a few days but hopefully stops the vaginal pain).

I'm having the same did you find out what it was?

Misthios · 11/06/2024 22:00

Thrush. Canesten pessary and cream sorted me out.

Go and see your gp.

I had what I thought was a uti, had a urine test but it came back clear. I also thought I had thrush but nothing would shift that either, add to that I had pain in my abdomen. This all went on for weeks and I was at my absolute wits end. Then my clitoris started hurting, that had me in tears!

Went to my gp, he said 'oh that's vaginal atrophy' here have some cream (Ovistin 1%), use it every day for a week then twice a week going forward - thank the lord for him, it started to feel better within days, honestly I could have kissed the bloke Grin
