Teen with irregular periods, wants to stop them altogether

I'm very supportive of whatever she wants to do, she is almost 19 and almost finished A Levels.
She has ADHD, and is very socially anxious so I'm going with her to the GP this week at her request. I just want her to be happy!
Her cycles are incredibly irregular, some months she'll have two periods and some months only one that's very, very heavy. Poor soul.
She's tried different contraceptive pills and wants to stop her periods altogether, especially as we're going on holiday. She just wants to be able to plan nice things without worrying she'll get her period.
Do you think the contraceptive injection might work for her?

No, not yet. She's panicking that the GP will take blood at the moment, and might say she doesn't want to attend the appt. Her anxiety is really bad, poor girl.

Loads of good advice on this thread, she does need investigating and she will need blood tests, you need to go from that premise. I realise she has anxiety but she is 19, the blood tests might pick up something important....

The injection stopped mine. I was on it for almost 11 years.

My daughter is the same OP bleeds through back to back pill taking. She recently got referred for a scan to check all ok. Which was normal. Now trying another type of combined pill.

Blood previously found very low iron and folic acid so aim is to reduce bleeding.

In my experience progesterone only pill and injection didn't work but could be worth a try but a scan would be best to rule out issues first. Bloods would also check iron.

My dd is only 13 and started her period when she was 10 and was hysterical despite me talking to her about them for years in advance ( she has autism ) and she actually refused to leave the house ( and therefore go to school) when they came so the decision was made to put her on desogestrel which was prescribed by a doctor off license at Alder Hey due to her age at the time being under 12. She takes 2 a day and hasn’t had a period since:

She actually can’t cope even hearing the word period she’s so traumatised by it. The double
dose must make a difference.

there’s also the implant op, I’ve had this in the past and it was great.

I was the same as your daughter when I was a teen. Irregular periods and very heavy. Often anemic during my periods as well which was exhausting. After years of asking for help, I was finally diagnosed with PCOS! There may be other reasons your daughter has irregular periods but definitely push for help from a GP - just because she is still a teen doesn't mean they are not affecting her quality of life x

She could have norethisterone, it completely stops periods, it's the same hormone as the mirena coil but taken in tablet form. She won't need a blood test to be prescribed it. Is there a sympathetic GP she could see & she needs to explain how distressing her periods are.
