Tranexamic Acid

Just after a bit of advice...

I have seen gynaecologist for heavy periods (I'm 51 if relevent) and after scans showing nothing problamtic I have been presribed tranexamic acid - this is the first month I have used it and I am confused! I was expecting a slower flow but I've had nearly no bleeding - is this what should happen?

I normally have an awful day 2-3 where I can go through superplus tampon in 20 minutes (always have to wear a pad as well) , so rarely venture far from a bathroom. Yesterday was day 3 and I took the lunchtime dose late and I had a small gush in the afternoon - back on timings with dose and back to next to nothing.

Today is day 4, so last day of taking tablets and I am worried that once I stop then everthing is just going to come gushing out! Sorry if I am being a bit thick, but I assumed that I would a period as normal but it would just come out at a slower and steadier rate?

I've also just started on HRT if that is likely to make any difference.

No, it basically makes your body reabsorb it (I think). I have the same problem but take 1-2 tablets on a heavy day and that reduces the bleeding to almost nothing (you do often get some clots a bit later).

So no need to worry that it's lurking behind the floodgates!

Thank you for your reply - I am feeling somewhat reassured now!

I've taken tranexamic acid for years and also mefenamic acid I take them both at the same time.

They are game changers I went from not being able to leave the house on day 1 of period to now going swimming on day 1.

What you have described I would say is normal in my experience although obviously check with your doctor.

I only take for first 2 days. How many are you having a day and how far apart

I was told to take 2 tablets 3 times a day for first 4 days - which sounds a lot now! Maybe I should only take them on my normal heavy days?

The prescription was from the hospital, so I think I will need to speak to my Dr/pharmasist to arrange the onngoing presciptions anyway so I will ask when I do that.

I think mine is as needed and up to 6 a day. But as I said, I find one tablet once a day usually does the trick (and mine are mega heavy too).

ZebraD · 24/05/2024 14:33

I used to take it and it is amazing…just slows it right down to almost nothing. If you were to forget a tablet for example it will just come back again. How wonderful is it to not be so heavy when taking them. (I am on the mini pill now which has all but stopped mine and it is heaven)

Reading this i dont think it works for me at all. I have nothing like described which is interesting definitely something to bring up with gp/consultant when i see them.

I’m feeling the same. I take 2-3 per day and days 1-3 are still really heavy, but not as bad as they are without. If I take more than that a day I just end up with a really long period… like 8-10 days.

I have 2 3 times a day for 4 days. I still lose clots and bleed heavily. Only upside is i occasionally go from 10 days to 7 or 8. I have it for endo and suspected adenomyosis so may be a bit different i suppose.

This has been an absolute life changer for me, I am amazed. Apart from the small gush, I've just had light bleeding. I reduced to 1 tablet 3 X day on day 4. I'm am now just hoping that I will be able to get this on repeat prescription.

I'm sorry to those that it hasn't worked for, I would be interested to know the science behind why it works for some and not for others.
