Ferritin advice

Helloooo

As per the title.. looking for some advice!

My ferritin was 12 in Jan, the GP was not bothered (even though I was insanely symptomatic) and I was advised to take some iron supplements so I started on 20mg. Levels have crept up to 38.8 which I am pleased about however.. would this level be satisfying? I’m still symptomatic and I am trying to figure out if it’s related to ferritin!

anxiety, heart palpitations, fatigue, breathlessness (it’s awful), vertigo, panic attacks, feelings of doom, loose bowels what feels like 50x per day, nausea, heavier periods

Thanks!

How long have you been on the supplement? I have been taking 2x ferrous sulphate 200mg for 3 months and my symptoms have pretty much gone now, I had everything exactly as you describe.

Thank you for replying!

what was your ferritin level before taking the supplement? That’s so reassuring though. I started taking mine in march every other day (as advised) but I’m now taking it everyday as it’s so tiny! I did try ferrous sulphate two weeks ago but the stomach ache was crippling!

I'm sure someone more qualified will answer soon but from reading this forum it's my understanding that you need a minimum of 70 to get healthy hair growth. I would use that as your target if I was you.

GPs are often not great with iron deficiency. Ferritin under 30 is deficient. Ideally you want to be over 70 to stop symptoms and over 100 is optimal. You might find this website helpful
