Shall I have a hysterectomy?

I always had bad periods, and am now in perimenopause so they’re getting less regular/weirder. I’ve been offered HRT.

Separately I have a triple prolapse (vaginal, bowel and bladder) and need to have surgery to fix it.

Im wondering - shall I just have everything whipped out while I’m at it? So hysterectomy plus prolapse repair all as one surgery.

Then no worries about periods anymore, and although I’d still need HRT it would be simpler (only oestrogen, no need for progesterone as well) which might be easier on me?

Grateful for advice!

Have they said it would be an option to have a hysterectomy whilst having the surgery for prolapse?
My total hysterectomy was life changing. (fibroids/Endo & periods so horrendous I couldn’t leave the house at times). The only downside of having it has been that my face has aged, seemingly overnight. I had no clue at the time how much of an effect losing my ovaries would have. That said, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. The way I was suffering was awful. I was advised to have a total hysterectomy as if any endometrial tissue remained attached to the cervix, even a tiny bit, it could still result in monthly bleeding and, leaving the ovaries could result in ongoing pain. It sounds like you need to have a discussion about it with the gynaecologist so you can be fully informed before going ahead, but I don’t regret mine.

Had hysterectomy for fibroids and horrendous periods.

Best decision ever. In theatre at 9.15am, in the car home by 5pm.

2 day took a paracetamol at bedtime so i would get to slerp with nagging pain, didnt use any other pain relief after that.

Go for it!

Best thing i have ever done (after having children). The freedom of no monthly --massacre bleed is liberating in itself.

I've written on here before about my hysterectomy- best thing EVER. 9 years ago now and I really am a new woman.

Are they offering it though? It took me years to get referred for mine and got fobbed off by many doctors.

Well it’s private so yes basically they’ll do it if I ask!
thanks for all the words of wisdom. I’m leaning towards having it, just worrying about recovery times etc.

I'm having rectocele repair later this year and then possibly cysto-urethcele later next year. Uterus also prolapsed.

Private consultant wants me to keep the uterus in as long as possible. Says it's highly likely my bowel will prolapse once uterus is gone.

Its fucking horrific. That said I'd quite like my ovaries out to stop the endless PMT (am on HRT mirena coil for progesterone and while the bleeding is better, I have awful moods from ovulation and terrible period cramps).

Somerandomgirl · 14/05/2024 11:41

Its not that simple.. hysterectomy by itself will create prolapse as the organs will fall into the empty space... i wouldnt advise you.... and theres other problems that will come with it

CanaryCanary · 14/05/2024 17:41

Hmm. I suppose I’m just thinking one big surgery rather than one smaller one followed by years of menopause…..

But yes definitely need to discuss more with the consultant
