Worsening anaemia

I started on iron approx 3 months ago for low Hb due to exceedingly heavy bleeding which started in November and can last up to 2 weeks, with light bleeding in between (I have lifelong irregular periods due to PCOS).

I had a repeat earlier this week and it has worsened, so had to go in to the day unit for blood (1unit). They checked and Hb had dropped further and my ferritin and iron were in my boots too!

I’ve been quite relaxed about it until now as I’m sure it’s menopause due to my age (50), and am waiting for a gynae appt. however, I‘M now starting to worry that there might actually be something quite wrong with me and that I might actually be unwell. I’ve had a USS, which was fine apart from a small polyp.

Has anyone else experienced this? My rational head says that it’s due to the continuous bleeding as I regularly soak through a super night pad in less than 10 minutes, but I’m having a bad weekend with horrible thought.

@Openup i was flooding horrendously until 15months ago. Massive clots, as soon as I stood up I could feel the blood run out of me.

Blood test gave me ferritin of 16 on a scale of 13-300. GP put me on iron tablets straight away. I also started HRT plus transexamic acid at the same time. My iron went up fast. Plus I then had the mirena fitted.

GP looked at all my bloods since I'd given birth 12yrs earlier and I'd never been over 35 but no one had thought to mention it.

Have you considered the mirena?. It's literally changed my life. I use it for the awful bleeding and the HRT, not for contraception.

It does sound to me like its the horrendous bleeding. I don't know how you cope. Are you using TXA to help?

Have they considered giving you tranexamic acid? It is only temporary fix, until they find the reason behind the heavy bleeding, but will significantly reduce the amount of blood your losing.

Tranexamic was prescribed this week, I think they were reluctant due to having to be on blood thinners during pregnancy. I would happily have the Mirena, but they want me to see a gynae first.
My Hb was 78, Iron <2% and ferritin 4 before transfusion, which freaked me out I haven’t been able to eat I’m so worried.
