Can a cervical fibroid be confused with a polyp?

During a routine smear (which has come back clear - no issues) the practice nurse identified an ‘enormous polyp’ on my cervix. I have been referred for an appointment to have it removed and have been told there’s quite a wait.

It bled for the first time for a few days after the smear, but has not bled since.

Prior to this, I’ve had unexplained constipation for several months. More recently, I’ve also started needing to pee at night, have developed low back ache and a general ‘heavy’ feeling of discomfort, combined with what feels like sporadic period pain.

Dr Google says this sounds more like a fibroid than a polyp so my questions are - has anyone had similar symptoms to mine with a polyp and has anyone found out a suspected polyp is actually a fibroid?

Any advice appreciated. I am early 50s.

Yes, this happened to me twice. The second time I told my gynaecologist I believed I had a fibroid and not a polyp, he didn’t believe me until surgery!

Hi I've had this, a very large polyp on my cervix grew out of nowhere and was prolapsing down there. I'm sure mine was more like a fibroid like polyp but they never said. All came back normal

Thank you, I suspect mine is similar. Did you have it removed as an outpatient? I don’t want a GA!

I had a large ‘juicy’ cervical polyp removed recently and then a follow up pelvic ultrasound to check that all was ok with my uterus. The polyp was removed as an outpatient. I was in and out within 15 minutes and histology was back a few weeks later.

Hi yes. It was under local. Didn't feel a thing, it was cauterised off. 20 min procedure and minimul spotting afterwards like a light period. All came back normal

Yes I can only imagine this is what a gynaecologist was wittering on about 10 minutes before I was taken into theatre (not what you need 10 mins before being put out) when they stated I didn’t have a fibroid (thanks surgeon) - they thought it a polyp before a fibroid on 4th March (who knows! They had 10 months since scan) due to the ultrasound staff being unable to handle fat or slightly bigger people being hardly slim themselves. (I have no idea how)

I just hope ‘the professionals’ who run Suffolk pals never need gynae assistance.
