Hi,

im 26 years and overly scared about my boobs this pregnancy.

i noticed one nipple is a little bit inverted. I can remember it always was a little bit sunk in sometimes in the middle but now during pregnancy it becomes really obvious the right one is more inverted than the other. Im so scared.

is this normal?

An estimated 10-20% of women have naturally occurring flat or inverted nipples. What are you scared about? Cancer? Ability to breastfeed?

The changes you report are almost certainly related to your pregnancy but you should discuss it with your midwife as nipple changes can be related to breast cancer so it would be good to rule that out / stop you worrying.

Re breastfeeding - the majority of flat / inverted nipples pop out during labour or during breastfeeding - though you may have latching issues if you're very engorged / whilst the baby is learning to feed. If you are having issues or your nipples remain "shy" then you can use silicone nipple shields - just get the right size, which is related to the size of your baby's mouth (rather than your boob size). You may get people telling you that shields dry up your milk but I didn't find any good quality research to back this up for the newer silicone ones (as opposed to the thicker old rubber ones) and managed to feed DD1 for 19 months using them all the time (as my nipples never popped out).

I used nipple shields as baby couldn't latch without them but over a few weeks my nipple was drawn out and eventually we were able to Breastfeed without them. They've gone back to being inverted now I have stopped breastfeeding though.
Btw, nipple shields come in different sizes and I would really recommend a lactation consultant to help you work out which size works but more generally to help with positions.
