Any dentists our there?! NHS or private root canal... or extraction...?

I have just been to the dentist (emergency appointment)... and have to make a decision whether to have the root canal (or possibly extraction) either under the NHS or with the senior dentist who specialises in this but then it would be private and around the 6-700 mark.

When I asked about the difference the dentist (junior) told me that the senior dentist would be using different materials etc. so I am wondering what the difference really is and whether anyone could advise. Am also wondering about the longevity of root canal....

I am very anxious about getting this right as very unwell generally at the moment and might have a cancer operation over the next few weeks too (so need to get over this first). I also have incredibly long roots (don't know if this makes a difference) and Sjogrens so some dental issues are to be expected sadly.

If anyone could help I would be incredibly grateful as have to make the decision tomorrow!

I’m with an NHS dentist & they’ve told me my root canal treatment can only be performed privately at a cost of £800!
or I can have it taken out at NHS prices.
I can’t understand this?

sorry op to add this to your thread.

Our NHS dentist is a big practice so I wonder if that means they can offer root canal etc. which smaller ones can't. Sorry you are in the same position!

I had to make a similar decision and went for extraction as it was quicker and less painful than root canal, which may not have worked anyway. And go for the private dentist if you can afford it, especially if they're more experienced.

Depends where the tooth is. I recently had a filling redone but they said if I got nerve pain afterwards I would either need root canal or an extraction. It's right at the back, I would probably just have an extraction tbh. Plus dentists aren't exactly covid safe these days, I could do without catching covid again so would go for the quickest option with least exposure too. Anyway, so far so good, no nerve pain so don't have to make any decisions yet. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I go to a small dentist practice - NHS and a month ago I had a root canal and crown for £319.20 which is the top band for NHS treatment. It is porcelain, the dentist is very experienced and it is indistinguishable from my other teeth.

Mine is a premolar

Im having to make a similar decision. Mine is really complex and my wonderful nhs dentist has said she is happy to try but if she can’t compete it then I’ll have to be referred to our local specialist and great cost.

im considering just having it out and being done with it 😣

AmusedMaker · 03/04/2024 19:33

Yes, I think I’ll just have mine out.
can’t afford £800.

I have had 2 rotten teeth extracted (plus 4 for braces and 4 wisdom teeth). I have had 3 root canals and a lot of crowns.
In my case due to low number of teeth - I will do anything to save a tooth otherwise its implant or denture time (I have lupus and my mouth is badly impacted)
I had 4 appointments for the last root canal and it will need crowning (as did all my root canals) in a few months if it settles - that's a big extra cost. All mine is done privately (insurance pays half).
If I hadn't had 4 teeth out for braces I'd happily lose a back tooth rather than the root canal palava
