Hysteroscopy - what does it search for

Hi,

I think I've been horribly naïve, I thought a hysteroscopy looked for certain cancers and could determine whether a fibroid was a polyp. Am I wrong? My situation was I was told no fibroid existed (even put this on a discharge letter) and had the coil inserted which is now an infection and referral to specialist clinic to get it removed as failed on gas and air first time round and said only see one string. It went in by ga and sadly strong pelvic floor so I'm imagining it won't be easy coming out.

I'm halfway through the waiting time for results of the apparent hystero and when calling the hospital where I had this procedure done to check I am ok with another hospital, they are talking about endometriosis? Can you get that temporarily from the coil being infected? The original consultant who did the procedure has gone off on really long leave it seems.

I've booked a private scan without the need for a GP referral for next week as the GP just insists a scan was done in May 23 and that showed a fibroid and that's it. I did note one of the private clinics saying if you are slightly overweight that can distort an image.

Did they maybe say endometritis, as opposed to endometriOsis? Endometritis is an infection or inflammation in the uterus so that would make more sense. Have you got antibiotics for the infection?

Yep, metonidazole and other one doxycycline.

I just wish I'd run away from that ward on the 4th March, really easy for my family to say they'd have just got up and said no surgery. Just minutes before I went down the consultant who I'd never met before said it wasn't a fibroid I deeply regret not saying beg your pardon. Now I'm just left with conspiracy theories between the medics which doesn't amount to what has been put in writing for now.

It does sound confusing, hopefully you get the results back fairly soon then. In the meantime, keep an eye on the infection and if it seems to be getting worse contact your GP or 111 straight away.

Thanks yes it’s terribly confusing. I had an internal scan last May when a fibroid was diagnosed, I’ve never seen the scan report for myself, the GP sent me to gynae without wanting to try anything for such a small fibroid and I didn’t ask them to do this, I repeatedly asked the fibroid type to be ignored, gynae themselves never told me and I’m now left wondering if they used this procedure to diagnose the type for themselves but very oddly telling me in the meanwhile it doesn’t exist.

I’m totally use to the idea the fibroid given the type is hard to treat/untreatable/goes away by itself. I feel awful I’ve been through a ga which could have prevented, who knows.

In 2 weeks time it’ll be 6 weeks and I’m honestly unsure if I will hear any results then. I’m sure I came round with another doctor saying there was nothing to get hold off so nothing to test and because of what was said minutes before surgery I asked was there a fibroid, to which the answer was no! and promptly handed a disgusting leaflet which says don’t make unnecessary appointments and hold up other women who need this. All I wanted was my GP help after a scan the West Suffolk themselves did on a Saturday last May.

Apparently I’ve been taken out of the patient initiated appointment queue when I have contacted the original hospital saying I want the coil out, they apologise for the lack of any response to date and advise they predict it will be a few months wait until I’m seen.

I called Benenden today in some last desperate hope and they don’t offer coil removal and said to go back to GP/complaints process with them but they hide behind the hospital. I thought about PALS but unsure whether that is the best idea.

The hospital which I went to in an emergency couldn’t believe the whole process either (and I don’t blame them) they said query PID and when couldn’t remove under gas and air said I could go to a specialist clinic for removal post infection hopefully I can stay into 2 queues and see which ever comes through quicker.
