Night sweats..only in winter

bumpington · 13/03/2024 17:09

I'm 42, the past three winters I have been having drenching night sweats only in winter (when it's below about 10 degrees at night).
I've seen a private endocrinologist who was perplexed and ordered a lf-fsh test at different stages of my cycle and they all came back as relatively high fertility and no signs of peri.
As soon as we get to April they disappear only to come back in Nov. they weren't as bad Jan and Dec this year as it was mild, wtf is it..has anyone had this?
Our bed clothes end up soaking and we have to use a dehumidifier as it's so bad.
I've tried just a think blanket so I don't overheat but then I'm so cold. No heating on from 7pm. It's also only happened since the covid jabs but I'm not sure if that's a coincident.

What tog duvet do you sleep under? I have a 4.5 tog duvet and sleep in a t-shirt with the window cracked open during the winter.

Lovemusic82 · 13/03/2024 20:16

I get these too and am the same age as you. Had blood tests to see if I was peri but all came back clear, tried HRT for a month which gave me awful side effects so m now back to the weird night time hot/cold sweats. I get pretty cold at night but then I wake up feeling really hot and have to use a fan to cool myself down. Other times I wake freezing cold but sweating.

ohthejoys21 · 13/03/2024 20:17

It could be nothing to do with the seasons and you could just be in peril menopause?

bumpington · 13/03/2024 20:17

Summer duvet all year round. Seems to happen whatever I do, window open or closed, duvet or light blanket. And on random nights but always when it's colder.

@Lovemusic82
I tried two types of hrt from my gp while waiting to see endocrinologist, both came with a ton of side effects and zero effect on night sweats. I never wake up hot, always freezing cold. Always in winter, so at least I get 6 months off a year.

Are you leaving the central heating on overnight so there is no dip?

bumpington · 13/03/2024 20:21

@ohthejoys21
Well this is what I thought. But I had two appointments with an endocrinologist and he said it would be all year round, not just half the year. The last three summers March/April to Nov zero night sweats, nothing at all.
Regular periods to the day, no other symptoms of peri at all.

@TheYearOfSmallThings
No we turn it off at 7 as have a toddler and it makes her cough get hot and cough.

Night sweats can result from some medications and intolerances.

My doctor said that although I was clearly peri HRT might not fix mine as I'm on a lot of other drugs.

Are there drugs things you are exposed to winter only? Is your winter bedding different material from your summer? (I mean I know that is not unusual but it light be causing it),

SSRIs are apparently notorious for it.

bumpington · 13/03/2024 21:00

@Octavia64
Same bedding as I sweated all over the winter duvet first winter it happened and it's too thick to wash and DH doesn't feel the cold.
Don't take any medication at all.
From extensive reading on google the only thing I saw was a vague reference for SAD. I lived in a hot country for 5 years and hate the winter but take extra strength vit d and get outside where poss.
I'd love to know anyone else who has winter only sweats and what is was/what they did.

Have you seen your GP and had a full blood count? I've had lymphoma and night sweats are a symptom. Other signs are loss of appetite, itching, fatigue, but sometimes there are no symptoms (I had it for several years before I was diagnosed).

bumpington · 13/03/2024 21:14

@namechange0998776554799000
Yes that was the first thing they checked, full bloods several times, had a chest X-ray and ultrasound also. All normal, slightly low iron

I do sweat more in winter, my theory is that because it's cold, I am more likely to wrap the duvet high round my neck and basically "cook" myself!

GoodVibesHere · 13/03/2024 21:31

Is there something you are eating in the winter e.g.curries, hot chillies?

bumpington · 13/03/2024 21:40

@GoodVibesHere
Nope. Toddler ensures we basically eat the same ten meals on rotation all year round 😂 I don't eat anything spicy either.

Blackcats7 · 13/03/2024 21:40

I think it’s to do with wrapping the duvet round you too. I get the same thing occasionally but only on coldest nights.
Do you wear cosy pyjamas? And socks? Might help.

bumpington · 13/03/2024 21:41

@Blackcats7
Pyjamas and a hoody usually and welly socks so I can not use the duvet and save the sweats.
Loose duvet and a t shirt otherwise if I do use the duvet (4.5 tog).
I hope it's something this simple.

Do you consume alcohol ? I’ve heard this can cause it. (No judgement just throwing it out there- for anyone else).

Backtothe90ties · 13/03/2024 21:45

I was getting this although probably not as much/badly as you and it was actually because I was cold. I always sleep in a vest and on cold nights my arms being out of the covers made me cold and then I think my body tried to warm me and then I sweated. I googled it and it was one of the first things that came up. When I put long sleeves on it stopped completely.

bumpington · 13/03/2024 21:57

@RickyGervaislovesdogs
No I'm teetotal. Not drank for about 6 years.

KK05 · 13/03/2024 21:58

I get this too but only in the winter I sleep in just pants all year round (just comfier this way). I have tried a lighter duvet (end up cold but still sweaty) sleeping in pjs (fluffy and cool ones) opening windows, closing / opening bedroom door, leaving the heating on low and nothing made a difference.

The only thing I can think of is I have the duvet up round my head and fully tucked in during winter but in summer I don't.

I'm late 30s so younger than you. Plus had various blood tests and totally fine. I think it's a mystery

bumpington · 13/03/2024 21:59

@Backtothe90ties
sometimes I wonder if that's it. But I wear a long sleeved hoody to bed and still sweat. It's like I'm cold so I sweat to warm myself up, but how to stop this. I wake up freezing. It's a pain in the arse.

OP posts:
bumpington · 13/03/2024 22:01

@KK05
I'm perversely glad I'm not alone.
I don't really tuck the duvet round my head anymore and try to keep it below my chest if I go under the duvet.
The endocrinologist was very adamant that it wasn't hormonal as it would not be specific to the colder seasons. But he still wasn't sure.

OP posts:
Backtothe90ties · 14/03/2024 20:46

@bumpington maybe it needs to be lighter than a hoody but with sleeves?
