Tranexamic acid for heavy periods

Hi, I'm trying this for the first time for heavy periods. Leaking onto bedding/pyjamas at night is the worst part (especially staying in other houses or a hotel) but I do have to change pads/tampon frequently in the day too.

I took 2 doses yesterday once I first felt AF coming. Then 2 today. Now I'm not sure whether to take the 3rd one now (last took at 3pm, it's got quite heavy since - did I leave it too long?) or closer to bedtime. The GP suggested trying 3 x a day not 4. Thanks for any help.

I take two at a time, three times a day. I’ve been in them since 2017 and I honestly couldn’t be without them. Like you I was flooding all the time and work was a nightmare. I had to keep a spare suit in the car in case I got caught out.

I also take menafamic acid along with the tranamexic acid but not usually at the same time.

2 tablets, 3x a day - no more than 3 days, is what I was told.

May I ask how old you are?. I am wondering about peri menopausal bleeding here. I think around 20% of women experiencing such heaviness of bleeding in peri menopause. I certainly did.

This is not normal and you should not put up with it at all. Presumably the GP prescribed you these tablets, what else has been suggested by this person?. You need a gynaecologist referral as such bleeding could make you become anaemic. If funds allow I would actually phone your local private based hospital and see a gynae for an initial consultation.

These particular tablets had no effect on my levels of bleeding in the long term and I was taking then at regular intervals through the day. The only measure that worked tablets wise was northisterone and when that failed to work it was endometrial ablation surgery.

2 tablets 3 times a day for 4 days is what I was told.

Same dose here.

It worked well to dry up the bleeding, but I did find that it didn't shorten the period – mine were 10 or 14 days, so I still had a lot of heavy bleeding to contend with – it did just help me be able deal with commitments and leave the house on the really heavy days.

Same dose for me as other posters here. I agree with PP, it didn’t make mine any shorter but definitely made them lighter. I take them after meals too as they occasionally make me feel a bit nauseous

I take 1 tablet 3 times a day evenly spaced throughout the day. It's supposed to be for 3 days but I sometimes don't need it by the 3rd day so I stop at 2. It does really help, I couldn't be away from a loo on my heaviest day without it and now there is virtually no flooding whereas before it was horrendous.

wast542 · 13/03/2024 13:40

@Bgr1936 yeah same here. It just delays the inevitable. It's handy if away for the weekend or have a night out etc

HelloMist · 13/03/2024 19:00

Thanks for your replies. Based on this time, I'm not sure I'll bother with them every month. But might be useful for a period due while I'm away from home. I use reusable pads at home (alongside some disposable/tampons) but not when away.

It only seemed to make it marginally less heavy but I didn't stain the bedding.

@AttilaTheMeerkat I've also had an ultrasound requested, I think to rule out fibroids etc. The GP didn't suggest blood tests though I think I had some done last year and this isn't a new thing for me. I don't think I'm peri yet as was looked into last year relating to something else.

Wow, that's long, @Bgr1936! 😕
