Really heavy period after coil removal

Can anyone advise please - I had the Kyleena coil fitted in early October and had none stop light bleeding from then. I wanted it for contraception but also to alleviate my heavy periods. I decided I'd had enough of the constant bleeding this month and wanted it out. I couldn't get an appointment at my surgery so was advised to go to my local sexual health clinic. The nurse was really surprised I'd been given Kyleena given my history of heavy periods and said Mirena would have been much better. Anyway, she took it out and the next day my period started. It's been 7 days now and it's horrific. I'm still leaking through sanitary pads every couple of hours & (sorry for the tmi) but have constant huge clots coming out too. I've had two miscarriages in the past and I'm definitely loosing more with this period than I did with them, though it's not painful at all. Is this usual for a first period after coil removal or should I be worried?

How are you now @Hobsons123?

May I ask how old you are?. I ask only as if you are at the peri menopause stage of life heavy bleeding can occur in some women.

The cause of this needs to be determined as well as treating the symptoms and I am not altogether surprised the Kyleena coil did not work, the mirena could likely give the same outcome.

You need a gynae referral to see if fibroids are present as these can cause heavy bleeding to arise. Something is causing this to happen and in my case it was constant rises and falls of both estrogen and progesterone. Endometrial ablation surgery finally stopped my constant heavy bleeding.

I'm 46 so yes, could very likely be peri menopausal. I have always had heavy bleeding though as I have pcos. What's concerned me most is that since having the coil removed the bleeding has been off the scale, I've never known anything like it. Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try to get an appointment with my gp after the weekend.

I have PCOS as well and in my particular case the bleeding associated with this was very light. What can cause heavy bleeding are fibroids and or endometriosis (which I also have) to name but two.

I hope you are successful in obtaining a GP appointment and that this person is helpful. Sadly for me mine was not. I was fobbed off with a blood test even though I had gone in there asking for a gynae referral as my levels of bleeding were both constant and heavy.

I ended up having endometrial ablation surgery in the end and this was the only thing that actually stopped the bleeding. Constant rises and crashes of both estrogen and progesterone hormones were the root cause of my particular bleeding issues. The cause needs to be addressed here as well as treating the symptoms and you will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

How did you get on with the GP? I have had same thing since my coil removal end of Feb. It’s been off the scale. Clots size of my hands and gushing through clothes. I know I have a large fibroid. Hoping yours have settled down!

I didn't actually end up going because weirdly, days after me posting, it just suddenly stopped. No usual tailing off, it just completely stopped overnight. I've never had anything like it before. I'm waiting to see what happens when my next period starts. I hope you get some answers.

I had this after getting the mirena coil removed. I had 3 super heavy and long periods, it was awful. They've now returned to normal but it's left me very anemic.

I would say it's worth persisting past the constant light bleeding, it does stop eventually!

Yodel294 · 29/03/2024 21:42

I bled my coil out with a huge clot, thanks to fibroids. It grim!

I did too!

I had this too. It actually scared the shit out of me and I think doctors should make women aware that this sort of thing could happen so they can prepare.
