UTI won’t clear.

I always suffered from UTI’s but whenever I had antibiotics from the doctors they were always clear pretty fast.

I’m 30 years old and I’ve just given birth 8 weeks ago and I’ve had this UTI for over a month. It’s not like the usual ones I’ve had before as there’s no pain it’s just this constant urge to go. I’ve had 3 different lots of anti biotics but I still feel the same urgency -
3 days of nitrofurantoin
3 days of pivmecillian
7 days of nitrofurantoin

the first urine test I had showed that I had an infection but since I got tested after the first 3 day tablets they’ve said it’s gone but I know my body and it hasn’t. I’ve had swabs and no infection is showing and my anxiety is increasing

I have private medical insurance so I’m booked in to see a urologist but im wondering if anybody has any ideas? Is this just how my body is now after I’ve given birth? I felt fine in the weeks after it and now I just feel rubbish especially being a new mum I want to spend this time enjoying him not constantly thinking about this urge

In also being treated for thrush and I’ve tried d mannose and it made me a lot worse. I’ve tried cutting out sugar and only drinking water also. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Op I feel for you as it's horrible, I know. I had an ongoing prob like this last year, 3 sets of antibiotics but the thing that finally worked for me to clear it was fosfomycin granule satchets ( prescribed by nurse practioner) D mannose didn't work for me either.
My urologist also tells me to drink lemon barley ongoing basis to help prevent recurrences and of course to drink plenty.
Hope it clears up soon Flowers

Overactive bladder? Eat something salty when it happens see if it helps (i know this from my mom -pharmacist- dont ask me what it does ive no idea but it works) .. i mean if tests show all clear and no apparent reason for it to happen... are u stressed?
Also theres the sachets for cystitis in pharmacies

I went to see a urologist today who had put me on a low dose of antibiotics for 3 months & he’s ordered a bladder scan for me. I’m hoping they find something (not something serious) but just a reason as to why I’m feeling this way.

@chorusline79 i haven’t heard of the lemon barley before I’ll definitely try this, might be a nice change from plain water :)

@Somerandomgirl i didn’t feel stressed but my stress levels are gradually increasing the more I continue to not get answers so could be related? He mentioned possibly an overactive bladder but we’ll know more after the scan

it also feels like my thrush is still there after 3 lots of treatment so making me feel a bit sore :(

Ask for hiprex…..

Another post discussed something similar and suggestion was if you are just 8 weeks postpartum your urethra could be bruised from labour so not a uti but physical impact of labour. Which should heal.

Shm93 · 09/03/2024 10:17

Thank you @BeethovenNinth I’ve heard this mentioned a lot so will look into this also

& @Waferbiscuit im hoping something like this is the case.

how strange is this though, if I ever have a glass of wine. It cures it for the day and then comes back the next day. I know alcohol is bad for UTIs but for me it seems to mask my symptoms for the day? I wonder why this is

Gynae/urologists are increasingly recommending local oestrogen cream applied to urethral opening and surrounding area for younger women with persistent UTIs. You'd want Ovestin or equivalent.

Given that oestrogen levels drop after giving birth, this might be especially relevant.

I’ve had a bladder scan yesterday and they’ve found a 4cm cyst but said this shouldn’t cause the frequent urination but Google says otherwise???

I hear you, I have this regularly and go through phases were I will have UTI symptoms one /off for weeks . It is really unpleasant and I have yet to find out why i get so many. UTIs scare me as my mum ended in hospital with sepsis due to an untreated UTI , but if yours are being lab tested and confirmed as negative then it must be something else.

Are your doctors sending every test to to the lab ? Mine weren't originally and they can only refer to a urologist if I have repeat confirmed infections , from the lab and not a dip stick. They are monitoring it now and are sending my results to be tested, for possible interstitial cystitis, aka bladder pain syndrome, its a horrible thing to have.

The other possible thing , and please don't take offence to this, but some STIs such as Herpes for example can mirror UTI symptoms and not everyone knows they have it either as it can only be diagnosed by a swab from a live case.

Waferbiscuit · 13/03/2024 11:57

OP, just one further thought. I get UTIs a lot and find that reducing sugar intake really helps. Sugar feeds the bacteria so less sugar and eating/drinking things that are more alkaline does make things better. Good luck.

BrilliantOutside · 06/06/2025 19:58

OP, did you get to the bottom of this and get treated? I’m in a very similar position, 8 weeks pp, UTI, 3 days nitrifuriton, 3 days Trimethoprim - now extended by 4 more days.
first dip stick test showed infection, the following 2 showed white blood cells but nothing else. Labs were clear.

have been referred for a scan on nhs so I don’t know how long it will take to be seen for that.

In the past I’ve had UTIs that have cleared within a day of taking antibiotics and that have barely shown on dipstick test if at all. So I’m convinced it is still an infection. Drinking 3-4litres of water a day.

I PRAY that your thrush has cleared, I had this after 3 consecutive UTIs several years ago and then the symptoms of a burning vulva and vagina persisted for 9months. Referred to gyno who found nothing and discharged me. No help. Was on anti fungals for a year, no help.
years later I took amoxicillin and had the exact same flare up and realised I have a mild allergy to penicillin (which I then found out runs in the family). Although now I’m wondering if the DMannose has something to do with it too.

i really hope and pray that you got sorted out quickly and were able to enjoy your precious time with your baby.
if you have any advice I’d be enormously grateful xxx
