Periods on progesterone pill

2024horizons · 29/02/2024 22:08

Just started the progesterone only pill. Had a period at about 24 days. It was so light, not even sure it was one as such. Barely anything over two days.

It's thrown me a bit as I am used to living my life by my periods.

Pros
My mood is calmer all the time
Light to no bleeding, will this last, if so a massive plus
Boobs are bigger

Cons
I was very teary on 2 or 3 days before my 'period'. Could be ADHD meds which I just started. No way of knowing.
My mood did still drop on my period which is what I wanted to take the pill to help with. Do I speak to GP about a temporary antidepressant on my period?
Very Spaced out on my period - is this normal? Never felt that before. Normally I feel a bit fragile. Could have been lack of sleep.
Short cycle - don't mind if it is light, but will it be predictable? Was that even my period or is there another one to come? (My cycles were previously 33-34 days)
Had slightly less drive and motivation in second half of cycle- this was quite annoying

Seems like a lot of cons but actually the mood overall I am happy about.

I am going to try and get more sleep.

So many questions 😂

I am on the mini pill and don't have periods at all, no changes in mood, anything really. You may find this happens for you once your body has adjusted to it.

StealthMama · 29/02/2024 22:49

You're only a month in it sounds so I would give it at least 3 months to settle. I have no periods and no mood issues taking it.

Just to give a different experience. I'm on the progesterone only pill and have been for a few years. I definitely do get bleeding- sometimes nothing for a few months followed by a big bleed and periods of spotting so it isn't predictable for me.
I do also get a couple of days a month of being prone to teariness and being ravenous similar to pre pill experience - I have no idea how the biology of that works! But the hormonal effects seem to be regular whereas the periods are not.

I have no choice other than this pill though so just take whatever comes with it (which isn't that bad in my experience just not the side effect free experience that lots of people do get)

Thanks all, @whensmynexthol1day Same I cannot take estrogen. Do you take it at the same time every day?

Was definitely more hungry which I don't mind, it's just more difficult to track if I don't know where I am in my cycle. It was like my guide for about 25 years 😂 I may still log what day I think I am on my cycle for now.

I do try to take it at same time each day but mine has a 12 hour window (some have 3 I think) so I'm not that precious about.

I’ve been on it since May stopped periods for a bit then had a period between Oct and Dec where they were all over place some just a couple of days and it’s driving me insane. Bleed lightly 2 weeks ago and stopped then I have been bleeding more heavily (still light for me) probably since Monday. So mine gave def not settled down

Concider yourself from the lucky ones that actually might not have periods on this pill, half of us bleed and bleed ... mood changes are normal with hormone changes

They often do have. 12 hour window for pregnancy protection, it for hormone balance it's better to take at the same time everyday.

Our hormones drop as the day goes on so I find taking early evening is best.

I'm thinking of giving up on it.

Pros
Yes generally calm
Yes light period
Boobs bigger

Cons
Mood still dropping at random times. Worse in fact as I am more hungry and seems to be related to this.
Quite spaced out and drive is low pretty much all the time.
Also and a new con is my skin is really dry and has lost its springyness. I forgot to take the pill for two days and it bounced back up.
Random niggles - elbow pain.
Snivelling- didn't even realise I was doing this until my Dr asked me if I had a cold.

I have been trying harder with sleep, but it's now all such a fine balance, I have to get enough sleep I.e. 7 hours, eat no less than my maintenance calories, or my mood is shit. And my skin is just shit all the time. I'm thinking it's a good lesson as I wasn't getting 7 hours sleep, and I do have the odd day when I'm a bit lax on meals, so if I stop the pill, but makes sure I do those things that might help. I want my drive back. I already take an immune suppressant which has estrogen lowering effects so I think I just killed all the estrogen.

Your boobs will revert to your normal size within 2-3months.
As for periods, I only have light spotting if I miss a day of taking the pill, otherwise no periods at all.
Zero effects on mood for me.

2024horizons · 23/04/2024 19:14

Update- not had a period for 56 days now since I stopped the pill.
