Thrush after period

Crochetmadmama · 26/02/2024 01:22

So I suffered with constant thrush for about 3 months straight before Christmas, nurse took swabs confirmed it was thrush treated it heavily with tablets and partner got treated, January period came and after I have mild thrush, binned all my pads and switched to reusable , also sugar free and no carb, cut out coffee and no scenty stuff, finished my period two days ago and I have thrush again.

Any tips because I don't know what else I can cut out.

Also stopped birth control pill and we only use condoms now.

I thought maybe iron I had a really terrible period as it was the first off the pill and felt really shaky and low, taking it helps with thrush then.?

Had bloods checked for diabetes to and don't have it.

Full blood count would show low iron and that is quite standard in a blood test. Did it go? I have it now and on day two after Fluconozole oral tablet . Hoping it goes .

Hi,

Yes after every period it only lasts about 3 days and then clears up itself, probably because I'm sugar free and don't eat breads so I'm not feeding it, its really bizarre.

Try probiotics they do help with thrush. I used to get it a lot and treat with pessaries the joy....now i take probiotics when i start feeling it and its gone very soon
Other thing to elimenate maybe..toilet roll? If its scented or something? I get irritated by some brands 🙄i get thrush from so many things its annoying like hell.. cant have scented shower gels or anything .. even most shampoos do the same cause u know water flows down your body so again... eliminated everything scented..and detergents and everything...

EBearhug · 06/03/2024 11:33

Low iron can be a factor in thrush? Well that helps explain current outbreak...

I don't use anything scented, loo roll is unscented and i dab not wipe as apparently wiping can cause thrush? who knew.

Which probiotics do you use? ill give it a go

I get thrush after my period too, according to gyno it’s common and a lot of women don’t even notice. I have stopped using tampons for my lighter period days and don’t treat it as such, just stick a slick of vaseline on my vulva after a shower so it does not get sore.

I didn’t know about the low iron connection -would taking iron supplements help?

I use Bio Kult Candea. Just to warn you at first they might make you feel nauseous if you for real have thrush ..or its just me, i get the same effect from the oral thrush pill, makes me feel nauseous until it clears it, i guess it means its working😶take at night maybe. you can take them everyday or whenever you need tho , i only take them when needed and it its gone quite fast for me

Update had my smear today, bombarded the nurse with my thrush symptoms and what iv cut out to try and help it (she said iv gone beyond to help it) and also suffering with painful intercourse when the thrush is gone, she took more swabs and think I may need referring to a gynaecologist but will see what the swabs return! Hopefully get some answers, it's not fun at all

There's a Canesten probiotic which is really good but you should get treated for the thrush first. You then use one a day for a week and then at intervals thereafter.

I've suffered with very thrush during IVF as your hormonal balances get whacked around. Canestan cream does help but you can develop a resistance to it. The thing that has really transformed/cured it is sun exposure. I have a terrace where I can expose my bits to the sun, in small doses (10-20 minutes max in summer sun) and it clears it up over about 3 days.

Ah I don't think I'd get away with it I live in a new build house and we are overlooked at every side, got me thinking how though as I'm still struggling with thrush :(

I used to get the same 3 days after leriod then clear up by itself, never cut carbs or sugar

Maybe you could use an item of white fabric with very open weave/lace/eyelet as quite a bit of sun would get through. Some UV also goes through windows (UVA in particular) but I don't know if that would have the same anti-fungal properties as full spectrum sunlight - worth a try maybe!

HarryBlackberry1 · 26/08/2024 08:44

I've had thrush since January, it seems to be ingrained in the skin of my vulva. I feel for you as it's awful. I'm being referred to gynaecology as it looks like it won't clear up. It's quite unusual as I'm post menopausal. However, these are things I've tried after scouring the internet over many months (in addition to canesten creams and long term courses of azoles) - cutting out sugar, women's probiotics every day, boiling underwear (seriously), eating live yoghurt, using hydromol on my bits to wash with in the shower, using multi gyn actigel. I'm not having much success. However, I've read that these things can help. Good luck!

allgrownupnow · 26/08/2024 08:47

I had a year or more of the thrush after each period, then stopped using a mooncup and now it's fine.
I was diligent about cleaning/sterilising but I guess something about it introduced and irritated me, with the thrushiness
Now use a combo of period pants and tampons and haven't had thrush since - at least 6 months.

I also am prone to hormonal thrush issues as had it very badly during pregnancy. Only cure at that stage was birth.

Did the swabs return any other findings?

Yes I had a staph infection to and went on a course of anti biotics which caused a thrush flare but I still have thrush flaring constantly after treating both, referred to gynaecologist also :)
