Itchy vulva

ARMSDOWN · 21/02/2024 21:00

I'm going completely insane. My vulva is so itchy. It's in a localised spot on each side. No thrush. No STIs. No BV. Just unexplained intense itch. I havent changed shower products. Don't shave or wax. Tried washing with just water. Has anyone had this before and found a remedy?

I'm 33 so I don't think so.

Have you tried vagisil? Basically a moisturiser for your vulva. It solved my random itchiness once I realised it wasn't thrush.

weasle · 21/02/2024 21:07

How long have you had this? Does it look normal or discoloured?

If white patches it could be www.nhs.uk/conditions/lichen-sclerosus/

In which case you should see your GP for an examination and referral.

I haven't but I'll try anything!

Stop eating sugar and see if it goes away after 5 days / a week.

I eat very little sugar but will try this.

It sounds like lichen just from the way you describe how bad/itchy it is. I have it and could rip my own skin of itching, its the worst. Get steroid cream from your gp asap

weasle · 21/02/2024 21:12

Not sure how shaving relevant? The vulva doesn't have hair it is a mucous membrane like the mouth.
Is the itching on the hair-baring skin and not on the vulva?

Worriedmum40284 · 21/02/2024 21:13

Was also going to suggest Lichen Planus or Lichen Sclerosus. My GP at the time seemed unaware of this as I went round and round in circles being tested and given preemptive treatment for thrush/BV/STIs to no avail. Needed a specialist to get to the bottom of it and diagnose LS. Took a really long time to get there!

The vulva certainly does have hair. My itching is on my labia (should have said this) which is part of the vulva. I think you mean vagina.

It's unbearable.

No sorry I meant the mucous membrane of the inner labia majora and the labia minora which is what LS usually affects. I don't think LS occurs on the epithelial hair-bearing part of the labia majora so hopefully for you it isn't LS if that's where your itching is.

LS usually manifests as white patches on the mucous membrane and also makes the skin fragile and tears easily especially with the itching and inevitable scratching.

If in any doubt, I'd go to the GP as soon as you can and specifically ask if it could be LS or LP and if in any doubt the GP should refer you to a gynae dermatologist.

weasle · 21/02/2024 21:36

Standard steroid cream will not work. LS needs specific high dose topical steroid.

In the meantime applying an emollient such as Vaseline or Yes! and a warm bath or shower may give some temporary relief.

Maverick66 · 21/02/2024 21:37

Had this with menopause .
Failing that have you changed your washing powder?

Dear God more people who don't understand female anatomy. The hair baring part is the mons pubis and the labia majora which are part of the vulva.

The components of the vulva are the mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibular bulbs, vulva vestibule, Bartholin's glands, Skene's glands, urethra, and vaginal opening.

You can see the label vulva on this diagram 🤦🏻‍♀️

pokebowls · 21/02/2024 21:52

@weasle and LS is commonly on the labia majora, labia minora around the anus and on the shaft and glans and foreskin of the penis

idratherbedrawing · 21/02/2024 21:54

I had this on and off for years and finally got diagnosed with vulval eczema about 4 years ago & got steroid ointment and emollient prescribed. Steroid really helped - I have had couple of flare up since but steroid helped immediately. Ahead of getting that diagnosis the most relieving thing was sudocrem

Is it likely to be early menopause at 33 though? Have used the same washing powder for years.

Pokebowels no need to be rude! I'm aware of anatomy thanks.
I was trying to help the OP. I have linked to the NHS page on LS which lists areas that can be involved. I didn't think the OP would be too worried about glans penis involvement at this time.
Sorry if my input isn't helpful. Will return to mostly lurking.
Hope you get it diagnosed and treated promptly OP.

tizalinatuna · 21/02/2024 22:41

My mons pubis is insanely itchy. Am hoping it is because I started taking biotin for nails. Have paused that for a few days. Never had anything like it.

tizalinatuna · 21/02/2024 22:41

Mons pudas I think it says actuallt
