Bleeding on HRT - will I have to stop the HRT?

I've been on HRT for about 4 months now. I'm taking gel (2 pumps) & 1 x Utrogestan pill 100mg daily, and Vagirux tablet twice weekly.

A few weeks ago I started with a period (my first in over 10 years). GP confirmed it could be the HRT as I've not yet been on it six months. She asked if I'd like to stop but I wanted to continue. Last week I had another period. Each of them lasted for about 4-5 days. I've not told the GP about this one yet.

Those of you out there who know about this kind of thing, if it keeps happening do you think I'll have to stop taking the HRT? Since I started taking it I've been able to get a full night's sleep for the first time in years, and I dread finding myself unable to sleep properly again. I've also found that my need to get up and pee in the night has been significantly reduced.

I've read that the Vagirus tablet can cause this. If it keeps causing it, does anybody know whether I might be able to continue with the other two parts of the HRT?

Many thanks for any info.

I'm on hrt have periods monthly, I though it was normal. Maybe move the post to menopause board for more replies.

I'm not a Dr or any kind of medical expert so this is just an opinion only.

I thought utrogestan was prescribed to protect the womb and actually can encourage bleeding. It is most commonly used for women in peri.

I'd speak to your Dr if you're worried.

Your GP seems very complacent about this, especially as until now you haven't had a bleed in 10 years. I'm sure guidelines are to investigate post-meno bleeding.

I've had similar recently, and GP sent me for a scan on my uterus as a precaution and everything fine. HRT needs tweaking (no mention of cessation)

Hi op, I’m in the same position as you. Same combination and dose for 12 months and have had bleed again this morning. The HRT has improved my quality of life enormously with my bladder, reduced anxiety and sleeping well.
I’ve sent online enquiry to my gp. I’m happy to have a scan but scared to have hysteroscopy as our hospital doesn’t offer any pain relief etc. Hopefully like pp said just a scan and maybe tweak the dose.

No, you don't have to stop. Within 6 months of starting/changing HRT it is considered normal after this it should be investigated. But you still don't need to stop.

If no cause is found they should change the progesterone part of your HRT as some women need more to control bleeding.

Utrogestan is used for both women in peri and menopause.

Don’t panic OP!

First of all, get a GP appointment as this is not normal/to be ignored.

Process is for you to be referred by your GP under the 2ww guidelines. You will have a scan to rule out any obvious causes and measure your womb lining.

You may then be referred on for a hysteroscopy (again under 2ww guidelines). At that point they are looking for thickening lining, polyps and any other likely causes. They may take a biopsy to be on the safe side if necessary but often it’s not necessary.

If it’s diagnosed as having been caused by your HRT, it may need tweaking (ie increase your progesterone) or possibly give you a Mirena Coil.

You will feel much better for knowing!

Just re-read your post. Your GP is not following the correct protocol. Ask for a scan.
