I’m worried my IUD has perforated my uterus

I’m hoping someone has had a similar experience and can share.

I had the mirena fitted end November because of constant anaemia on the copper coil. I bled heavily after fitting and then bled every day in various amounts during Dec and Jan. Contacted the GP who said it was normal to bleed but to come in for a coil check. End of Jan went in, GP couldn’t find the strings. She has referred me for a routine ultrasound.

She said either it’s fallen out or it’s perforated my uterus. My worry is that it’s still in there somewhere as if it had fallen out wouldn’t my bleeding have stopped? I was very regular before.

I have a retroverted uterus and I can’t help but wonder if on insertion it perforated my womb lining.

Spoke to GP receptionist today who told me to call the hospital ultrasound dept and explain I was still bleeding. Ultrasound dept not happy with this advice and said there’s 400 people waiting for a scan in front of me.

Any advice? I’ve made enquiries at my local Spire as just want to get reassurance that all is ok.

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish! I do despair at some GP’s.
The coil strings will have simply gone up inside, like mine did. I also have a tilted womb. The scan will show its position. The only problem is that you will need a hysteroscopy to remove it, but don’t panic, it’s done in clinic and mine was painless.

My strings couldn't be found but the mirena was still in place which was confirmed by ultrasound and xray. It was left in place until it expired. I did need a hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic to remove it when it expired though.

Thank you both, that’s reassuring.

The wait for the scan is ridiculous though. I saw a GP last week & had my scan in the community this week. Don’t they use a health diagnostics service in the community?

My strings disappeared without any perforation. GP referred me for an ultrasound to double check it was still there and working. And yes, it was removed with a hysteroscopy at the end of its time.
Insist of being properly referred for a scan though, as it could be that something else is going on, eg fibroids knocking it out of place and causing the bleeding. That said, bleeding is pretty usual and can take a good few months to settle down.
