Bleeding after hysteroscopy

BatshitCrazyWoman · 28/01/2024 06:05

I had a a hysteroscopy under GA 18 days ago. I had an endometrial biopsy and polyp removal and had a Mirena fitted (part of my HRT and to stop the hyperplasia). I'm nearly 60.

I still have some pain and I'm still bleeding. At my follow up appointment (on the phone) this week my consultant said I shouldn't still have bleeding, and contacted my GP to ask them to prescribe transexamic acid. She then wondered out loud if I might have an infection. I don't feel unwell, just sore and this sodding bleeding is annoying. But maybe I do have an infection? My GP is pretty rubbish, so I probably won't get that prescription until the end of the week, if that.

Has anyone else had issues like this?

I’d be wanting a swab to be sure, but spotting after coil insertion isn’t unusual.

It's not spotting, it's bleeding. I think I'll do a eConsult and see if I can get an appointment with my GP 😕

Definitely push to be seen and get swabbed for an infection. If you can’t see your GP, try a sexual health clinic if they’re available in your area.

My experience with this is not a great example, be warned!
I had a hysteroscopy for a second episode of post menopausal bleeding. Had the procedure under GA and was in pain and continually bleeding afterwards. It increased and I developed an infection which sexual health clinic diagnosed (pandemic so couldn’t get a GP appointment). Bleeding lessened but didn’t stop. Finally got GP to refer me back to the hospital as it had been over 3 months continuously bleeding by now. 6 weeks later had a total hysterectomy.

I did wonder if they had damaged a polyp or something but they wouldn’t admit that the hysteroscopy had triggered the problem, even though it obviously had.

Poor you @marriednotdead, what a horrible experience. I suppose any kind of 'interference' like a biopsy or polyp removal is a risk for infection. My consultant did say to get in touch with her if I was concerned, but she's hard to get hold of (private). Her secretary never replies to or acknowledges emails, and I can't make private calls at work (and I'd rather not stand on a street in central London to chat about my uterus!).

It could be the mirena itself causing the bleeding as some women do have bleeding with it.

I asked the consultant if she thought it was this, but she said at my stage of life, that's unlikely 🤷‍♀️ Not sure about the pain, though.

Totally failed to even get to fill in an eConsult form for my GP this morning - it goes live at 8 am, and I was rushing into work at that time (tube issues). Logged on at 8.10 am, and the system had been suspended as it was full 🙁 You have to use the form to get an appointment. I'll try again tomorrow.

I see regular posts on mn from people complaining about bleeding on that coil

Guttedme · 29/01/2024 12:21

Could you call 111? They sometimes have the power to get you seen in surgery. I was told an infection is highly possible along with damage which can occur with this type of procedure under GA when I signed the forms. I was advised 6 months for the coil to settle down.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/01/2024 15:00

@Guttedme I'm at work, the only one in in my team, so not really. I left a message on the consultant's secretary's answering machine (as consultant told me to let her know if bleeding and pain increased). So far I've heard nothing from her. I'm a bit concerned she might be passing a prescription request on to my GP, which means I won't get anything until next week. I have a day off tomorrow so will try and rouse someone. It's ridiculous!

No sign of any prescription, but I've managed to get a GP appointment for Friday.

If anyone is following my dull little story, I had my GP appointment, and she did a swab, so we'll see what that shows. She was surprised at the amount of blood, too - I feel vindicated 😂 She also gave me a prescription for the transexamic acid.

Not a dull story at all- it’s massively impactful and I think it’s worth the badgering to get to the root of the problem.
