Hysteroscopy

I'm postmenopausal, on HRT Everol patches and progesterone, and have had some bouts of light bleeding. I have not consulted by GP, and am very worried by the thought of coming off HRT and having a hysteroscopy. Can anyone tell me what a hysteroscopy is like?

If a hysterscopy is done with "local anaesthetic" is that to numb the cervix? @IwaslostinFrance

PS if you were on HRT did they suggest or make you stop taking it?
My oestrogen patches have been increased but not my progesterone and wondered if that may have caused the bleeding.

I do not want to come off HRT under any circumstances!

If you’ve recently increased your patch, it can be common to get some bleeding in the first few months, after which it generally settles.

The dose of progesterone should be proportionate. So, for example, if you are on the max approved 100mg patch, your doctor should discuss increasing the progesterone to 200 if on a continuous regime.

Yes, they numbed my cervix. I had the same for the uterine ablation too.

I had my hysteroscopy. I had a general anaesthetic, so it was delayed by a week or two. I had a polyp and fibroid removed, a biopsy taken (which was benign). I could not have gone through it without the option of a GA. I explained early on in the consultation why I wanted one. I was discharged with no further treatment or change to HRT. Very happy and relieved!

Excellent news. Glad it all went well!

I had a hysteroscopy today. I was so scared before hand to the point I was nearly sick but it was so straightforward. No pain - slight odd feelings at times eg when took a biopsy but I literally skipped out! Totally not worth a general for me!

I had one today under general anaesthetic which im glad I had. A friend had it fine in outpatients and found it awful.
I also read that the average cost to perform it in outpatients is less than £200, whereas as a day care inpatient under GA is more like £1,000. Apparently it took about an hour. Im post menopausal with a reverted uterus.

I've just had one under general anaesthetic and it was fine. It's taking a while to get over the GA though, feel very weird, but happy it's all over and that I knew nothing about it. Hospital staff were wonderful, and no pain but a bit of swelling around vaginal opening now. You do need some quiet days after to get over the operation though, so you need to be able to rest.

Could I ask - were you advised to stop your HRT prior to the hysteroscopy?

PepperSauce · 06/10/2024 08:57

I wasn’t advised to stop my HRT before my hysteroscopy. Still waiting for the results though 4 weeks later.

TempersFuggit · 06/10/2024 13:21

me neither.
