I know I shouldn’t be asking for medical advice on the internet but I don’t want to waste the doctors time unnecessarily. I have these marks on the top of my legs, they’re always there but seem to be worse at the moment. Has anyone had anything like this / know what it could be? I’ve had them for years (but never this bad) and never really thought about them until my friend noticed them when we were swimming last night and asked what they were.

im always cold so normally always have a hot water bottle on my lap in the evening so was wondering if it was some kind of heat rash and therefore nothing to worry about? They don’t hurt or itch at all.

I get this when hot water bottles are too hot! Should go away in an hour or so

Pigeonqueen · 23/01/2024 19:49

That is a lot more pronunced than mine but could be

I would get it checked out.

Thanks both for your replies. @tinyraccoon i did think this and it’s the logical explanation but they’re always there even when I don’t have a hot water bottle and they are quite noticeable even first thing in the morning!

thank you @Pigeonqueen I don’t want To waste the doctors time but wonder if it would be worth just getting it checked.

you've demonstrated a perfect example of erythema ab igne, caused by the hot water bottle. nothing to worry about, and on stopping the hot water bottle it will fade.

chocolatedream23 · 23/01/2024 20:11

I also get this with my hot water bottle… it actually ended up temporarily leaving my legs like that for a few weeks even after I stopped

Justaboutfunctioning · 23/01/2024 20:20

Thank you everyone, appreciated.

It's the hot water bottle, and recognised as such a 'thing'.

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 20:25

Mine do that in the cold!! PE was awful. Though I got a slight orange tinge in the patches!

CharlotteMakepeace · 23/01/2024 20:26

In the 70s these were called 'corn beef legs' if you sat too near to an electric fire!

PossiblyPertunia · 23/01/2024 20:26

Agree it's from hot water bottles. Invest in an electric heat pad, they're about £15 on amazon and they're not too hot to cause these marks!

ianshe · 23/01/2024 20:29

Yes my dsd had this on her stomach really bad. She was always using a hot water bottle. It took a year or so to fade !

The Scottish side of my family called them ' tartan legs'

sockmuncher · 23/01/2024 20:31

I was over using a hot water bottle and mine is still a little visible a few months after. It does fade with time!

ApolloandDaphne · 23/01/2024 20:32

We called it fireside tartan from sitting too near the coal fire.
