Any gynecologist’s out there? Smear went wrong coil dislodged ☹️

I had a smear yesterday afternoon. The nurse at the time said ‘on no the strings have got caught’ (I have mirena coil fitted) - but then carried on as normal and that was that.

I noticed bleeding, thought normal, had bad cramps, not unusual when your cervix gets scraped.

Today was getting very sharp stabbing pains up my vagina. Checked down there after going to toilet and found the two strings all the way hanging on the outside. I can never find the strings normally as cervix is so far back.

I call the hospital sexual health clinic where it was fitted, calls are not being answered due to staff levels, message says to email. I email, it says messages are not monitored on the weekend.

I call the walk in clinic we have, they said nothing they can do, no gynecologist around. They say call 111.

Call 111, they say get to A&E and they will send a note for them to get a gynecologist to see me, wait should not be too long.

I get checked in and explain. After nearly 3 hours I get seen and asked why I’m there. I explain. She still doesn’t understand why I’m there. I was told to go and they should have the notes. They don’t. The lady out the front mentioned nothing so she has to go out and get them.

she comes back and says there’s no one here that can do that. Try and call gynecologist on Monday. I say but what if it gets worse? (Pain) she says come back then. I said what would be signs it’s not good, she said she does not know because she isn’t a gynecologist.

I’m so upset.

can anyone reassure me that it’s ok? Is it ok to have a coil out of place and causing pain? Can it wait till Monday?

thank you

Anyone at all? Phoned the hospital and spoke to a midwife who said so should just pull it out.

God don't pull out your own coil! Other than A&E not sure what you can do, have you tried calling 111 to see if there's an out of hours nurse available you can see? So you have a women's hospital in your town / city?

I’d call 111 again, or try to book an appointment with a private gynae.

My mirena was inserted by a nurse (who did a shit job actually). A couple of months later I wanted it removed (mine interfered with sex, I have a low cervix). The nurse grumpily pulled it out again but she did warn me some women faint. Not sure any of that helps other than to illustrate that it can be pulled out but I would maybe google “how to remove mirena coil”

Oh I really feel for you. I couldn’t get an appointment to get it taken out and it was giving me sharp pains. One night I was at the end of my tether and just pulled it out. I wouldn’t advise it and to be honest couldn’t believe it did it myself but it did just come out really easily, nothing like getting it put in!

Don't pull it out if you're using it for contraception. Are you in the UK if you can just call a Gynaecologist on Monday? If you are and it's causing you pain I would probably take some oral pain killers (what ever you would normally take for a headache etc) and go to a and e. You can book yourself in with a "personal problem" that you want to see a doctor for. Don't try and explain, say you don't want to explain in public. Simply say to triage that your coil was displaced when having a smear and it's causing you lots of pain and you want to see a Doctor. You'll be in for a wait as it's not life threatening but it's also causing you pain so it's reasonable to want it sorted. Decide what you want done, e.g. removed or put back if they can or taken out and a new one put in, before you see someone so you can tell the Doctor what you want. The A and E Doctor is not going to be able to replace it but may be able to remove it so you aren't sore anymore and there will be oncall Gynaecology in all hospitals so there will be someone you can see even if they book you into clinic to have it looked at next week after seeing you today. It's also unlikely to be doing the job you had it put in for so ensure you use condoms if necessary until you get it replaced. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much everyone. I think I just needed to know it wasn’t a medical emergency if you see what I mean. I just feel horrible. It hurts and I feel like I need to wee all the time. I think my only option is to wait until Monday to phone doctor and hope I can see someone quickly. Midwife also said if I can’t pull it out, to try and push it back up 😬

I've had 2 dislodge because of heavy bleeding, they come out really easily if you pull on the strings, that's all any HCP would do. If you're worried or the pain is unmanageable then I would remove it. Pain settled really quickly after it was out both times for me.

Obviously there are better ways and medical help would be ideal but if needs must, they are designed to just fold and slip out when pulled.

Thank you. I’m going to try 111 again and explain what happened.
