Periods at 44

I am on day 4 of my period (started on Monday morning early)
I have got through a whole 32 pack of tampax super already. Is this normal? I have been exhausted all week, running on low. I'm sure it wasn't this bad last month but can't really remember because it was Xmas and busy.
I am 44, generally fit and well. No peri symptoms as such I don't think so far.
What a rubbish week Confused

Heavy periods is a symptom of peri.
But you my also be anaemic, which causes heavy periods

flutterby1 · 18/01/2024 21:51

I'm 47 and my periods have become super heavy in the first 3 days, soaking through pads. I think it's a peri menopause symptom ( I sometimes get clots on there too ) I feel very drained. Make sure you're taking iron tablets and maybe go to your doc , although I haven't yet as I don't have any other symptoms.

Thank you both, will source iron supplements tomorrow -didn't even think of that!

By the age of 44 I was thoroughly sick to death of my heavy periods; no sooner had I changed, went downstairs, only to need to come back up, as I'd soaked through the tampon and pad.

Doctor inserted the Mirena coil and I never looked back. It was bliss not to have to worry about them ever again. It stayed in for 7 years, by which time I was going through the menopause and never bled again.

45 here and my periods are the same, it's exhausting isn't it, doctor put it down to peri after ruling a few things out. Had a mirena fitted today @Hallmark1234 your post has given me a lot of hope 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Tranexamic acid has sorted me right out. I've suffered ridiculously heavy periods for years and investigations seeking fibroids etc came back with nada so they prescribed these and they are nothing short of miraculous. I used to be housebound on day 2, now I can wear cream trousers!

Thank you for you replies. It seems I'm not alone. I'm going to bed now as can't keep my eyes open, but will reply in the morning and re read 👍🏼

Was the Merina insertion painful ladies? I'm really tempted to try it but I'm a bit funny about having things 'in' my body 🥴 - hate tampons and worry that I'd be freaked out by it being in there.
Have also read some stories about agonising insertion.

Hallmark1234 · 18/01/2024 22:25

iammother No the insertion wasn't painful for me, but obviously depends on the skill/experience of the HCP. I remember feeling cramping/period pains on the first day, but after that virtually nothing and as I said in my PP, no more bleeding!

It was due to be removed after 5 years, but my doctor said it was fine to leave it a while longer.

No, I actually laughed when it was done as I’d heard horror stories. I’ve had worse smears.

DustyLee123 · 19/01/2024 06:58

The one thing I’d wish I’d done is have a Mirena earlier. The change to heavy, more frequent periods happened so slowly that I didn’t see it. I ended up flooding at work, thinking it was normal for my age, something to put up with. It’s not.
