Can you bring a friend or family member to hysteroscopy

Waiting on a hospital referral, Doctor has said they will most likely want to do a hysteroscopy. I initially said no, but Doctor suggested talking to them and asking for a GA. But, was thinking of maybe trying without GA first but only if I could have someone I know with me. I do have some trust issues due to a very poor experience in hospital so having someone with me I know would help a lot. Can you have a friend or family member with you for this procedure?

I went with my friend when she had hers. I've had that procedure done on 3 occasions, but didn't take anyone with me.

I had two last year one under local which had two female hca and male dr and they were all very professional. It wasn’t as bad as I had thought it would be. The second I had under GA because the procedure I needed was too tricky under local so tbh I just wished they done that the first time! There was a 6month delay between scan & procedure. I didn’t have anyone with me at local anesthetic one but my DH had to accompany me to the hospital for second one but obviously not into theatre.

I’ve had 4 hysteroscopies (all under a local), the first one my dh came with me as I was so nervous but he sat in the waiting room. Tbh, the nurses are so lovely I didn’t need him in there with me. One nurse just chatted to me throughout the whole procedure to keep me distracted.

For the other 3 hysteroscopies dh just dropped me off at the hospital, didn’t feel the need for him there at all.

I also had a uterine ablation under a local and again the nurses were all wonderful, made me feel very safe and reassured.

I have had the same experience with 2 colonoscopies and gastroscopes (have them all under locals as I’m petrified of a GA!) and again, the nurses were very kind and reassuring, the held my hand throught the colonoscopies.

Good luck op, whether they allow a friend in with you or not you will be in safe hands and the nurses will look after you.

Thanks for the replies, I think I’d actually like my other half there, a familiar face would really help. Plus I can always slap/cry on him if I need it.

Yes you can have someone with you.

This procedure came up during the first gynae outpatients appt I was a bit naive I thought an internal wouldn’t even happen - I was asked if I wanted my Mum to come behind the curtain and hold my hand when they tried to do in the second position, fortunately they only tried so many minutes before saying it needs to be a general anaesthetic so was booked in for that. I was told if that fails I get woken up and sent through an MRI.

If I had known I’d have taken pain killers beforehand to give myself every chance.

Yes. I held my Daughter's hand throughout. They have to give consent. It helps if the patient cites anxiety and the need for a companion.

My husband came to mine. He came into the room but sat on the other side of the curtain. He also noted down everything the doctor said to me while she was carrying out the procedure which was really helpful as I didn't take anything in!

Fingers crossed for you OP🤞But if you don’t want GA, please make sure you get at the very least a local anaesthetic. I’ve had it with and without and LA makes a world of difference. Not everyone feels severe pain but it’s not worth the risk imo. Good luck, I hope it goes really well for you 💐
