Hi, I’ve been recommended a hysterectomy for adenomyosis causing severe pain & not responsive to other treatments.
The (private) consultant I’m seeing specialises in gynae cancers (I’m not thought to have cancer- all scans show only adenomyosis- just ended up with him).
He has explained that he will not perform laparoscopic hysterectomies as a matter of principle as there is a small risk that, if a woman has undiagnosed cancer, cutting up the uterus in laparoscopic removal will spread it throughout the abdomen & result in incurable cancer. He clearly felt very strongly about this! (He will however perform ‘normal’ laparoscopies, ie investigatory ones, that don’t involve cutting up the uterus.)
He has recommended a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy- the laparoscopic element purely investigatory, with uterus being removed through vagina.
I was a bit disappointed by this as it would mean losing the cervix (unless I opt for abdominal, which he will also do).
Has anyone else been given this advice about laparoscopic hysterectomy & cancer? I’m wondering about getting a second opinion but won’t do if this is standard!
