Uterine polyp

Hi there,

I had an ultrasound this week to rule out PCOS due to bad acne and hirsutism (I've also had a range of blood tests but those were normal) and the scan didn't show Polycystic ovaries. However, they discovered that I have a uterine polyp and I should be referred for a hysteroscopy to have it removed. I suffer from anxiety (health anxiety as part of it) so I have just been so worried about the worst case scenario. I'm 36. Do people have positive stories about them? How long was the wait from referral to getting them removed on the NHS?

Thanks

Three years for me! Mine was fine-had it removed under general and a mirena coil put in. Bleeding finally settled back down after a year. Polyp benign as the vast vast majority are.

Wow three years! That's ages.

Had one recently (2 actually)...removed under local during hysteroscopy. The process was intrusive, but not painful for me. Both benign which I understand is the most likely outcome.

I have been on the waiting list for a hysteroscopy for two years. Finally got my appointment through for 5th January.

Sorry I should have said, I got my appointment in 9 days, but that was because they were worried about something else totally unrelated. In a way although the stress was awful of keep getting recalled, I was lucky to have the appointment so quickly.

Thanks for your replies. Wow 2 years is also quite long. I suppose that's reassuring in the sense that they wouldn't leave it that long if it was very serious. At least I can manage my expectations on waiting times then.

I have a hysteroscopy booked for January as I have a polyp and some endometrial thickening (I'm 59). Mine is being done privately and quickly as I'm post-menopausal and had a late menopause, which are risk factors. I'm a 'take each day as it comes' kind of person, so I'm not unduly anxious. I'm having a coil fitted at the same time, I'm more concerned about that as I don't want any negative side affects!

re your comment:
"I had an ultrasound this week to rule out PCOS due to bad acne and hirsutism (I've also had a range of blood tests but those were normal) and the scan didn't show Polycystic ovaries".

The cystic follicles associated with PCOS can and do disappear, only to be replaced by further cystic follicles. It can take a highly skilled operator to spot these. The polycystic ovary is larger than a normal sized ovary which is about the size of a walnut and can have a ring of pearls appearance to it.

What blood tests did you have done and on which cycle days?. I ask only as bloodwork taken on the "wrong" days can give misleading results. For instance did you have a day 2 test done to check both your LH and FSH levels; with PCOS LH is often elevated compared to FSH.

My polyp was a penundulated fibroid which hung into the uterine cavity. It was totally benign and removed surgically.

I am in Ireland and still getting heavy periods at 54 so got a internal scan and found a polps also so am having it and an ablation in january so trying to not even think about it. Was seen very fast after yearly appt. because of my age getting done 2mths after appt. Try not to worry yourself but do keep on top of it and ringing them etc.
