Peri discharge?

Thanks in advance for advice!

I'm 42 and for the last few months I've had a weird discharge most days. I've had the Mirena in for 3 years and don't get any periods.

Had it in previously (5 years then a gap of a couple of years before deciding to go back for another, for heavy bleeding). Didn't have a period or any symptoms/side effects first time around.

Anyway, last few months I've had this strange discharge. Sorry TMI but it's really watery and clear/yellow in colour. A strange smell to it...not fishy or like an infection. I've had thrush in the past and it's nothing like that. No pain or itching, no external symptoms...no other symptoms at all. I got BVV treatment just in case (7 days of squirt stuff) and it continued throughout.

I'm wearing panty liners day and night and changing them several times a day even when just a spot. Sometimes if I'm just out the shower I've realised the discharge is trickling down my leg. Almost like I've had a bath and "swallowed" up water that's then escaped!

I know the obvious question will be whether I've spoken to GP. I haven't, purely because I feel as though I've been nipping his ear about so many other symptoms and ailments (all for diagnosed and unrelated conditions). I know I should go but thought I'd post for some advice pre-GP Smile

Oh meant to add Blush does this sound like a peri symptom? Like I say, I don't get periods so can't say whether they've stopped etc.

You should ask your GP. Without worrying you, I had months of watery discharge when I was 47 which I put down to peri. I went to the Dr when I also had an episode of very heavy and prolonged bleeding. To cut a long story short, I had endometrial cancer and apparently one of the symptoms can be a watery discharge. I'm fine now btw. It was caught early and is very treatable at that stage.

I came on here to reassure the OP but now I'm slightly worried by the previous poster's post! (Glad you are well now @Pushkinini!)

I too get this exact same discharge. If I had to describe it @IwantToGoBackToTheNineties - I'd have described it exactly as you have.

The difference is I'm not on contraception and I get it during my period.

I'm 46 and I would say have had it at least a few years (maybe 3 years?).

It's so much of this strange clear liquid that I've had to change my pants sometimes. Which has been a pain.

I did go to the docs about it, had tests (this is where the reassurance bit comes in as I had a pelvic exam and ultrasound) and they didn't find anything.

I never really got an answer. They just put it down to wacky periods due to being older.

Previous poster now has me slightly worried that they maybe they missed something though.

When I madly googled at the time looking for answers, the internet seemed to suggest it as a possibly symptom of vaginal atrophy, but I can't say I've had dryness or anything like that.

I almost wish you could have this post moved to chat OP, just so that we might get some more insight / experiences.

If you had an ultrasound @FeelingRidiculousBut then they would probably have picked up anything sinister. I also had a very thickened endometrium picked up in an ultrasound so the discharge wasn't the only sign. However my experience has taught me to get checked out if anything isn't normal.

FeelingRidiculousBut · 15/12/2023 20:02

Thanks @Pushkinini - it could be worth maybe getting myself checked out again - just in case.

Thank you both, your replies are very much appreciated!

Hmmm, see it's a difficult one because I don't get periods so I have no clue if I'm peri or not. I've read about women's cycles going haywire in terms of frequency and flow. But I have no "normal".

You've given me food for thought and I'm more swayed to go to my GP although I think I'll need to consider changing my GP first. It's a constant struggle and fight getting my GP to take any action regardless of the symptom. Lord knows what he may be like if I go with a <gasp> women's problem.

To both PP's, did your discharge have that strange smell? I've never smelt anything quite like it before and I can't even begin to describe it. Definitely not pleasant though Blush I've been with my partner for 4 years and we were careful until we were sure we could rely on only my coil. I have no reason to believe it could be a STD (contracted during our relationship). The discharge has completely put me off sex and I'll only consider it when just out of the shower Sad we normally have a good sex life but he's been very understanding.

I think I'll post in chat actually, thanks for the tip!
