Nails are shite - Perimenopausal moan

MollsDolls · 14/12/2023 12:54

I am peri approx. 10 years now. Am on HRT and haven't looked back, (not for everyone but is for me).

My thing has always been my nails. If my nails look good then I feel good. I'm not a makeup/hair kinda gal.

But my nails are shite. Splitting/peeling/weak. I can't get them to grow much now as they break off. I have tried supplements/manicures/biab/treating them with cuticle oil every day for weeks on end. Nothing seems to work. To make matters worse my DD has the most fabulous nails like I used to have and it makes me a little sad.

Any suggestions please?

My nails have always been a bit shite and I am now menopausal. However, CND RescueRxx has definitely improved them. It's a daily keratin treatment.

Yep...have that. Apply it twice a day for months now. Sitting on my desk in work so I don't forget and have a bottle at home for weekends. 🙀

Oh no! 😥

Grumio · 14/12/2023 21:27

I have exactly the same problem. I put jojoba oil on mine twice a day and it has worked miracles.

Joonio · 14/12/2023 21:28

Vit D fixed mine.

Watch some of these vids - this is the person was recommended on Mumsnet. https://www.youtube.com/@TheSalonLife

MollsDolls · 15/12/2023 09:45

Taking Vit D too and no joy ☹️

Same here and mine were never that great to begin with.

Plus, I never seem to stop washing my hands which doesn't help!

Zinc!
Takes a couple of months but great for hair and nails.

Any particular brand or strength MrsMorrisey?

I stopped all treatments/ strengtheners etc. 2 cubes of raw jelly, collagen and biotin and good layer of vaseline at bedtime.
My nails were appalling for a couple of years - splitting flaking etc. now they grow so well.

SnoogyWoo · 21/12/2023 22:05

You need to fix them from within by taking collagen everyday.

LulaK · 22/12/2023 16:54

Are your periods heavy? My nails were increasingly crap and flaky for years. Turned out I was long-term anaemic. A year out from hysterectomy they’re stronger than they’ve ever been, don’t break at all.

Sbishka · 22/12/2023 17:10

A friend recommended a collagen supplement to me, I started taking it out of loyalty to her, but blow me if it didn't fix the problem within about 8 weeks.

LittleGreenDragons · 22/12/2023 17:12

2 cubes of raw jelly

I could do that. Is that maximum or minimum though 🤔

Not sure. I saw it somewhere else. I started on two. Once nails were good I've dropped to one a day. In new year I won't do every day. But I also did absolutely nothing on nails , no strengtheners or anything. Was really difficult as I'd painted them to hide how awful they were. I had to train myself to not look at them 🤣
But fairly quickly they stopped splitting and started to grow out 👏

Echoing this. I’d put my terrible nails down to peri but it turned out I was anaemic. After a few months of iron supplements they’re back to their former glory.

I'm a nail tech. Nails can be an indicator of underlying health conditions so it's always worth having a sudden change checked out, but if it's purely hormonal I'd recommend finding someone near you who offers IBX treatment. It's a bit like olaplex for nails. You can have it as a stand alone treatment or it can also be used under gel polish/extensions.

MollsDolls · 15/09/2024 20:40

So 9 months in nails are still brutal.
I can't find an nail tech anywhere near me that does IBX treatments. Gave in and went to a local girl last Dat and got a seal & protect treatment done and nails worse than before I got it done. They are breaking or peeling more easily than before. Today I was putting on undies after a shower and one ripped right off across the top. Not lace or anything to snag nail on my undies.
Nearest IBX treatment I can find is a 1hr 20 min drive each way. I just want to cry. First world problem I know but it so annoying now. 😭
