Copper Coil
After reading this article about the copper coil, I have every single symptom. Since getting the copper coil inserted I have had intrusive thoughts, my anxiety has gone through the roof, depression but also feeling numb? I’d love to know if anyone else has experienced this, will be ringing GP tomorrow as I paid to get it put in privately and has been the worst decision I have ever made.

Copper coil effects

UPDATED This January (2017) I had the copper coil removed after 4 years of the worst physical and mental health I have ever experienced and 8 months later I am finally becoming the person I once was. I count myself lucky to be living in the UK where co...

Nope.
I'm on my second copper coil and it's absolutely fine.

I had a mirena coil before and was an anxious, overthinking, emotional mess for 5 years. I didn't credit the mirena till suddenly the cloud lifted as it went past its 5 years.

You just don't get articles about "everything's fine, carry on" because that's boring.

OctogenarianDecathlete · 07/12/2023 05:48

Also, it's not an article. It's a blog about on person's experience. She hasn't controlled I'll the variables to know that the problem was her coil, as I didn't control all the variables to be 100% sure that my issues were caused by my mirena coil.

It's just an anecdote.

TheLurpackYears · 07/12/2023 05:51

I haven't read the article but would never hve a copper coil. I know how badly my skin reacts to copper jewellery and would never choose to put it inside my uterus, it's made of copper to create a hostile environment.
That and my mental health absolutely plummets for the first couple of weeks from conception and I couldn't cope ith that potentially happening multiple times a year.

I got endometriosis while I had the copper coil. Removed coil, had surgery, back on hormonal contraception, no problems since.

backatschool · 07/12/2023 06:16

Had mine in for 13 years, zero problems. I love it.

ChristmasSteps295 · 07/12/2023 06:30

I would have said I'd had no problems with it. I'd had one in pretty much constantly for nearly twenty years.

Having had it out now, my PMT symptoms have completely stopped. I used to get so angry, so tired, so emotional, without fail every single time. For a week before my period, I couldn't hear a man speak without wanting to belt him round the head.

My periods were irregular. Never had a clue when they'd start and period trackers were useless. I knew they were heavier but they're eighty percent lighter now which is significant. I assumed it was adding on a day. It was actually more like four.

I had no idea it was affecting me so badly. I won't get another one.

Not to mention it gave me pelvic inflammatory disease and I could have died.

I had the copper coil in for two years because I didn’t want to use hormonal contraceptives.
I had constant cramps and heavy bleeding.
It got so bad that I actually collapsed and dh rushed me to A and E.
The copper coil was removed and I never had anymore problems.
Dh decided to get the snip after he saw what I had been through.

NoraLuka · 07/12/2023 06:46

I haven’t had any issues with the copper coil which is just as well as I can’t have hormonal contraceptives. It does make sense that the copper coil could cause problems for some women, although you don’t tend to hear much about them except for the heavier periods.

I do think doctors tend to minimise the side effects of contraceptives in general. I was on the pill for years and felt like a different person when I stopped (in a good way), as well as losing a load of weight. Dr just said my hormones might be changing due to my age 🤨

It does make you wonder how many women are being affected by contraception of whatever kind and not realising it, if the only time you’re not on contraception is when you’re pregnant you might not even know what the real « you » is like.

Blue145 · 07/12/2023 12:17

Thank you all so much for replying, I thought because it’s copper it would have no affect whatsoever, but I’m starting to think maybe not as my mental health was under control until I got this put in.
@TheLurpackYears I’m the exact same with copper jewellery but didn’t make the connection until after the insertion. I know doctors will say it’s not due to the coil but I think it could have an effect to some degree.

I totally agree with you- not enough research in to some of the effects contraception can have on some women, I knew about heavy periods but nothing to do with mood changes or anxiety, even though there’s no hormones I think my body is sensitive to any foreign object inside.

No issues with my copper coil. Periods a day longer and a tiny bit heavier but still no longer than 4 days. No period pains.
My implant made me a bag of anxiety which is why I went for copper coil

ChristmasSteps295 · 07/12/2023 15:51

I will say it had the least affect on me of all the contraception available. I was persuaded to have the injection once and I was in a bad mood for three months non-stop.

That said, I do feel lied to. I've spent a good deal of my life thinking it wasn't affecting my hormones and getting miserable and angry every cycle was just how I was.

I am allergic to nickel too and I was used to fairly frequent sharp pains. I remember speaking to a doctor once about it many years ago and he was absolutely scathing about the possibility it could be caused by my coil. So I thought that was just normal too.

Hello,

Need some advice I decided 6 months ago to come off the depo injection and have the copper coil fitted (wanted to try non hormonal method as me and my partner want children in the near future) my periods have been all over the place since then. Sometimes I can have not heavy but constant bleeding for 3 weeks then stop for 2. Then back on for 3 weeks. Or can randomly stop for a day and then back on. Has anyone else had this issue? Do I give it more time to settle or go and have it removed. I’m on day 20 of bleeding now and I am sick!
