How to get Mirena Coil/IUD fitted

I saw the gynaecologist for heavy bleeding and bleeding between periods 5 months ago. She recommended that I get an IUD/Mirena Coil fitted to stop this and asked if I wanted to get it done right there and then. I (stupidly) said I wanted to think about it and she said she would refer me to a MOPS(?) clinic in a few weeks time to have cervical cautery and I could have the IUD fitted at the same time if I decided I wanted it.

I decided afterwards I do actually want it as the bleeding is out of control. But I haven't had any referral or appointment since then.

How can I arrange to have an IUD fitted now? I understand people have them fitted quite commonly for contraception etc, but have no idea how to do this

Call the hospital where you saw the gynae. Ask to speak to their secretary and say you're chasing up a referral for a coil to be fitted.

When I looked into private; a referral for an ultrasound scan was needed - the private hospital got in touch 72 hours later about a referral for U/S.

meanwhile I started in the nhs (primary care) and took the opportunity to ask questions about the coil ie if you get private, does the nhs look after etc.

The large GP surgery said they would do a vaginal swab before even inserting the coil and that has to be ok’d by a gp before the process will go ahead even.

I just booked an appointment with the local sexual health centre. They’ve got a day a week when they do Mirenas. I felt that they had so much experience with it they’d be able to advise properly

GP or family planning will be able to sort this for you

I had a smear test today and was talking to the nurse about having the coil fitted. She recommended contacting the local sexual health clinic as they have regular appointments there.

Our GP will fit them, and there is also the well woman clinic at the hospital. If you research sexual health in your area, there should be a clinic, but I know the waiting list here is about 12 weeks.

Thanks everyone for your answers :)

I've called the hospital, who referred me to the appointments clerk. They said there wasn't an appointment made and the next one is January, try the GP in the meantime. I called the GP and was told they don't fit them, try the sexual health clinic.

I called the clinic now and they said they don't fit them for heavy bleeding, just for contraceptive purposes, try the GP ...

I suppose I will have to wait until January then
