Comment in smear test

Just got back from a smear test. I had a baby 6 months ago so we were generally talking about that and we got on to the topic of delivery. I mentioned I had had an unplanned c-section and she said "yeah you have a really small cervix, there's no way you'd have got a baby out of there." I was just a little bit like, oh, really? I've never been told that before.

Is this something I should speak more to a medical professional about? We plan on another baby next year and after a horrible first pregnancy I'm now wondering if it's linked to the issues I had from the second trimester onwards, and also the birth. Basically I had such extreme pelvic pain from 3 months that I ended up housebound and on crutches. I had to stay on the floor of the house that the toilet was on and have all food and water brought to me for the day. I was constantly told it was normal and just PGP but it was really rather extreme - I put my frustration down to constantly seeing a different midwife at every appointment. One day. I ended up being blue-lighted to hospital in the last few weeks for suspected sepsis but it wasn't that. Delivered at 39 weeks after a recommended induction that went horribly wrong. After 30 mins of having the pessary in I basically had double contractions back to back with all of 20 seconds inbetween. I failed to dilate past 2cms and when they took me through to delivery I had gone backwards to 1cm!

Is anyone in here a midwife/medical professional that can give me any insight on if I should follow this up or if this could all indeed have been linked because it was missed?

Midwife here. You absolutely cannot tell if a cervix will open based on its size. They're supposed to be completely closed. If it's short then you may be more likely to go into labour. It doesn't make any sense. What a weird thing to say. Totally incorrect

@WAC1 thank you for your insight. Yes it was all rather odd. There was another woman in there with her who just nodded along. All very casually said but it's playing on my mind now. I've been Googling 🤣 (I know that's the worst thing to do) and now feel like I should follow up on it to find out if I do have a short cervix.

Was it an odd attempt at a humorous comment?

Guest234562 · 13/11/2023 19:35

I wonder if she meant you had a small cervix in that it looked like it hadn’t dilated and had a baby come through it?

matleavelove · 13/11/2023 21:57

@CurlyhairedAssassin I did wonder but I don't really get how it would be haha

@Guest234562 possibly! Although baby is now 6 months so no idea how long it takes for one's cervix to go back to normal? It was more the future tense of the comment rather than past "there's no way you would".

I was told that my cervix was small and hard to find considering I’d had children. I mentioned c sections and the nurse said it made sense and she could tell I hadn’t had children vaginally. Maybe your nurse meant the same?

Darthwazette · 13/11/2023 22:06

I think it’s possible to see you’ve delivered vaginally for ever from your cervix?

Lilacdressinggown · 13/11/2023 22:16

Your cervix never returns to how it was after it’s dilated. I think you are misinterpreting the comment - I think they meant they could see your cervix had not been fully dilated and a baby had therefore not passed through.

matleavelove · 13/11/2023 22:17

@Lilacdressinggown ahhh this would make sense! I guess I have misinterpreted it because the wording made it sound like she meant future pregnancies!
