Mirena coil moved

I had the mirena coil inserted 18 months ago in the UK. I want to have the coil removed due to a few reasons.
I went to the hospital yesterday and they said they couldn't see/feel the strings. I had an ultrasound and they have said that the coil has moved around 5cm into my uterus. I have attached the image.
I am currently living in a country in Asia so the hospital is international and private (so I am not sure if they are trying to make money from me!) But they had said that I will need surgery to remove it, and this will require me to be given an anaesthesia and be in hospital for a day which will cost about £1800!
Has anyone had a similar experience and not had to have surgery to get the coil removed? Thank you for any help.

I had mine removed under general anaesthetic when the strings went missing as several attempts at removing failed beforehand

That is correct information yes. If they can’t see or feel the strings, then there is no way they can pull it out vaginally.

Thank you for your reply. Do you know if your mirena coil was about the same location as mine?

Also, if you had it taken out, what route did you take? Did you go through the doctors and then a referral? Or did you go private?

I never got a picture of the scan. I was just told it was still in the uterus but they couldn't get hold of the strings. It was NHS so I got referred to a hospital to get it removed. Had to wait a few months

I was referred to the gynae department first for them to try to remove it with different tools but it didn't work and then I was referred for surgical removal via hysteroscopy

Thank you. I am so angry. I have insurance through work and anything to do with birth control is not included in the policy. It is so unfair 😪 I have no idea what I am going to do as I can't afford £1800 to pay for it to be removed.

My strings had moved up but on an ultrasound it was found to be in the correct place.
I had it removed with no anaesthesia and I'll admit that it was very painful.

This isn’t correct. They can often be removed vaginally if you can’t see or feel the threads. If the coil is in the uterus, there are a couple of things they can try using to remove it vaginally and it is often successful.

Soontobe60 · 18/10/2023 17:41

I’m confused - doesn’t the coil sit in your uterus anyway?

They can sometimes get embedded in the uterine wall and can migrate from where they are supposed to be.

That's true. As mentioned above. I had mine removed in clinic with no pain relief. The nurse just felt around with some kind of hook thing and when she got it out the strings were coiled up.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2023 22:04

They did try and remove mine without resorting to surgery but it was unsuccessful. I had a variety of people who tried but unfortunately it didn't work.

I went to a different hospital today. They gave me medication to dilate my cervix and managed to remove it after quite a few attempts!! So happy!!
