Hair loss! Help!

midnightblue12 · 02/10/2023 21:22

I'm female and in my early thirties. Take no meds.
Over the past 2:3 months I've noticed that in shedding ALOT more hair then normal when brushing my hair. It seems to be mainly when it's wet... I'll pull out a big handful of hair out of my brush. When it's dry not so bad...
my hair has always been really thick and now it feels limp and dull and very thin in certain places. My hair is healthy and been cut recently..... I just don't know what's causing this and I'm worried!
Part of me has forgotten what normal hair shedding looks like now and I'm massively aware of it.... but also I can't stop worrying!
My mums says it's the change of season 😳 Anyown else freaking out over hair loss?

Yes me. Been like it since July. Been to GP who said ferritin low, but supplementing for a month and still losing loads - Googling trichologists today in desperation but don’t know if I should give it a bit longer. I’m 45 so worried it’s peri.

midnightblue12 · 02/10/2023 22:10

Oh bless you, it's so worrying isn't it!
Did the GO do bloods etc for you? I really should make an app to put my mind at ease.... I honestly at this point don't know what's normal anymore :(
I have got to the point where I'm anxious washing my hair :(

Ferritin needs to be over 50

AThickLayerOfLard · 02/10/2023 22:28

Thyroid issues caused mine to shed.
Then low iron.
Low vitamin D and
low B12.

I’ve taken a huge clump out of the hair trap tonight, my usual iron tablets were out of stock and I’m feeling these ones aren’t great, I’d got my ferritin up to 34 so don’t want it dropping now.

Definitely try to get a blood test. You might be deficient in something. Also, what happened 2-3 months ago? Were you ill or did you experience a stressful event? Hair goes in approximeately 3 month cycles, so you don't necessarily lose the hair at the time and then are confused a couple months later about why it's happening.

Having experienced hair loss myself, it really is quite distressing.

Have you had Covid in the last three months?

TSJ19 · 02/10/2023 22:43

My hair fell out loads around 3/4 months after I had covid

midnightblue12 · 02/10/2023 23:30

I had covid at Easter so I don't think it relates to that.

I have a feeling it may be hormone related. I have really long cycles but about 3 months ago I had a longer then usual cycle.... I suspect o didn't ovulate. I also put a few pounds in at this point for no reason. Since had a normal period and normality has resumed but hair is still shedding so I'm not sure.

I think I'll give the doctors a call tomorrow! I just feel like they are so dismissive of this kind of thing. The last time I had issues with my periods they wouldn't see me until I have 3 month's consecutive issues so it puts me off going!

Try pantene root awakener and a good hair vitamins. I lost alot during menopause. It didn't work straight away as hair has a cycle but by the second bottle I could see tiny hairs..thank god. At the moment it's half price at boots with the advantage card. £2.50 a bottle. Absolute bargain..Google it for reviews..

Get your bloods done before taking vitamins to ensure accuracy.

The passmark in the U.K. for iron and b12 is very low so ask for numbers post blood test.

Westernstar · 03/10/2023 09:15

Yes the GP checked and wasn’t at all dismissive. They had them on record already for another issue so I only know ferritin is low (30) and the gp said hair growth needs 70 plus to be effective. Next time I need my b and d vitamins checked I think. I’m using watermans shampoo and conditioner but the shedding doesn’t feel like it’s slowing. I hate washing my hair, it makes it so visual.

Give your gp a call, maybe there is something simple there, good luck.

Yes I know what you mean about the washing! I love washing and drying my hair so much but now it just makes me so sad.
I've always had long, Thick blonde hair and then a couple years ago I deciddd to have a long Bob which was a drastic change for me. It's finally grown back and now this 😳
I just hope there's an end in sight.
I have a gp app on Friday and will ask for bloods then. I wonder if I should stop taking my multivitamin so not to fudge my numbers!
In my blood test last year my b12 was boarderline low but they wouldn't do anything about it :(

It’s hard, and just as hard not to freak out. I’m amazed with the hair I’m losing o have any left.
My GP said with ferritin it can be slow, and would test again in two months.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the vitamins, but what worries me a bit is I keep hearing that nhs acceptable levels so low. Keep reading about Philip Kingsley clinics but so expensive. Feedback seems good though.
