Hrt and fibroids

Those of you who have fibroids which are giving you symptoms, do you also take HRT to treat menopause symptoms?

I've a really problematic fibroid outside my womb. It's causing pain and bleeding. I need the oestrogen, but scared hrt will just make it worse.

My gynae said continue with hrt if it helps ( not sure it does!) and take norethistone for bleeding. I hate norethistone, it makes me depressed.

I've had an MRI of the pelvis and waiting on results. Ultimately I want a hysterectomy.

Thanks.

I was told norethisterone is not a long term solution, that you can take it six weeks max (tho they left me on it for five months in the end). I would also have concerns re HRT and fibroids because fibroids grow on oestrogen. I’m not really sure what to suggest except to ask consultant. I had a hysterectomy and started HRT after.

Thanks
I'm in absolute despair.
The pain is dreadful, bleeding has slowed, but I feel wretched.

Nothing happens this week, as consultants are on strike.

I could be left this way for many months now.

@Sortmylifeout52 sadly I think you are right. Gynae are so backed up. It took them months and months to sort me and I was regularly bleeding till I passed out and turning up in A&E. Can you afford private, at least for a consultation to get a workable plan going forward? Much love to you.

Sortmylifeout52 · 02/10/2023 16:29

@LulaK thanks.
I think I will have to a start considering private. I don't quite know how I'm going to manage otherwise. That said, I can't afford private either ( not really ).

Did you have fibroids? How long between diagnosis and hysterectomy did you wait?

Mine is pressing on nerves and I think my bowel; it's horrendous.

Were you working at the time before your hysterectomy?

I had been treated by the GP for months for heavy periods and suspected fibroids, because at that time gynae were turning down non-cancer referrals. But I had a huge bleed June 2022 and ended up in A&E and so in front of a consultant who then took me on. After months more faffing and hospital admissions, they operated last November. And yes I was at work on and off, limped along. Hope you get sorted soon.

@Sortmylifeout52 I can't help with your question. But thought id say that years ago I had a lot of gynae pain. It was July and I had an appointment with a consultant booked for the October. I wanted to see her sooner. So I paid privately to see her at the Nuffield. She then sent me for a laparoscopy a week later on the nhs. Then booked me in for a big op. Most of this was done before my original appointment. I felt I had cheated the system a bit. But this may be a possibility for you. This was a long time before the covid backlog though.

Is transemic acid suitable for you? I’m on hrt and I take that when bleeding and it has reduced bleeding

mirena coil is always mentioned to help reduce womb lining and is a mild ish form of hrt. GPs seem keen to fit those so quicker?

Sortmylifeout52 · 02/10/2023 17:17

Thanks
Ive just looked at The Spire in Liverpool. There is an appointment later this month, but they would want all the scan reports etc.

Just phoned nhs gynae to see if they will email me a copy of my MRI ( even though nobody has looked at it yet).

I have to do something.

Already have a mirena in place.
My issue is pain, deep nerve and pelvic pain.

The bleeding ( touch wood) seems to slow down as quickly as it starts.

Hiya, peri menopausal, early 50’s. Still getting periods which is a nightmare as I have two very large fibroids. Bleeding is very heavy and painful. I’m not considering histerectomy as I’m so close to menopause that I’m not sure is worth it honestly. What has made a difference in my symptoms (diminished the pain, inflammation and heavy bleeding) is a daily vitamin complex for women (centrum women 50+) and squeeze two lemons (or limes) into a juice daily (old Caribbean remedy) and exercise. No sugar and healthy diet. Keep your inflammation levels low as possible. It has made a massive difference.

Sortmylifeout52 · 02/10/2023 17:39

Thanks @beatrix1234
I'm 5 years post menopause and this fibroid has grown significantly in a year.

I need the HRT for menopause symptoms unfortunately.

The fibroid is also pressing on my bowel.

I will try the centrum 50+ though.

Ah got it. Is an ablation the next thing? Not sure that works if the fibroid is outside the womb. They are meant to shrink when periods stop but when?!

Sortmylifeout52 · 02/10/2023 19:24

@Newgirls yes they are meant to shrink after menopause but mine seems to have grown! Maybe it was the HRT that fed it?

It needs to come out, that's for sure!
Causing havoc everywhere 😢
