3 lumps found

Hi I'm really worried and shocked - looking for a handhold and any similar experiences or advice on what to expect.

I found a small lump under my arm yesterday, called the doctors and got a same day appointment. The GP examined me and on top of the lump under my arm has also found a lump in each of my breasts. I felt them when she showed me but now I am home am struggling to locate them. She has given me an urgent referral to the cancer clinic and I should get seen within 10 days.

I am completely shocked that I have two additional lumps I wasn't even aware of and unsure what to expect in this set of circumstances. I feel well in myself so it all seems a bit surreal. Would appreciate any advice or experiences. TYI

If you're not used to checking your own breasts, then yes, of course you can have lumps that you didn't know were there. As this is the case, your GP is unable to ascertain how long you've had them, if your breasts are lumpy etc etc, so being referred to a breast clinic will give you peace of mind if nothing else.

At a ‘one-stop’ clinic, you’ll see a consultant and have one or more further tests all in the space of a few hours.

To get the most accurate diagnosis of the changes you have experienced, you will have

  • A physical breast examination
  • A breast imaging test, such as mammogram (breast X-rays) or breast ultrasound scan. Be advised it is quite normal to have both types of imaging.

In some circumstances, they might take a biopsy. This will be done under a local anaesthetic.

As your breasts will be examined quite a bit, be sure to wear a blouse or some other easily removable garment. Separates are easier than a dress/all in one.

It is quite usual for a follow-up appointment to be booked in as you leave. This is usually by phone and takes place a fortnight later.

Lastly, this video is extremely thorough in teaching you how to check yourself. Do so, regularly as that way, you know what is normal for you, and what is not.

PS. Do not panic (and stay away from Google). The overwhelming majority of lumps are benign and absolutely nothing to worry about.

Thank you for all the info doublec- the video will be very useful. I have been able to find the lumps when I lie down with my arm behind my head but less easy when I am standing up.

I'm trying not to jump to any conclusions - I've had health scares before and don't want to get into that state of anxiety again.

I had a breast lump that both I and the brrast consultant could feel. Had all the scans and there's absolutely nothing there at all. Even if there is a lump/lumps it is most likely to be cysts or similar. I know its difficult but try not to worry and think the worst.
