Hysterectomy and anaemia

Does anyone know the level of hemaglobin required to allow a hysterectomy? Mine is a level of 104 and I'm worried they will cancel

Depends on why you’re having the hysterectomy. Probably best to speak to your surgeon/anaesthetist.

So it sounds like you've already been referred and put on the list so I'm assuming there must be other reasons for the operation, as I'm sure trying to lift your iron levels would be preferred at first. You aren't that low at 104 ug/L as range is 20-300 and GPs won't usually do much until you get to the very lower end. How far away is the operation date (or are you still waiting for a date?).

20 (or commonly 10)-300mcg/L is the normal range for ferritin not haemoglobin. An Hb of 104g/L is significantly anaemic but whether it would prevent surgery depends on what the reason for the surgery is.

TitsInColinsHands · 30/09/2023 22:38

@Greybeardy yes you are absolutely right, thanks for correcting me, I was thinking of ferritin!

@Vgtasd how long until your op? Is there anything you can do to raise your levels (are you this low even on supplements?)

Vgtasd · 30/09/2023 23:18

Operation is in a week, I take iron but not religiously as they make me feel so sick

Yeah feeling really weak and now bleeding quite heavily. Looks like I'll be back in for a transfusion soon. Good luck to all having procedures x

LulaK · 02/10/2023 15:53

I had a hysterectomy at 102, but it was an emergency op not planned. They said there was reason they couldn’t, just it might take longer to recover after. Is the anaemia due to bleeding that the op will solve, or another reason that will still be there after? That might affect their decision. I wasn’t going to stop bleeding and therefore have decent iron till they got rid of my uterus.

LulaK · 02/10/2023 15:54

*no reason they couldn’t

Vgtasd · 02/10/2023 23:04

Thanks @LulaK I've lots of fibroids and awful heavy bleeding so it's a vicious circle, I need the op to get my bloods up xx

OP posts:
LulaK · 02/10/2023 23:53

@Vgtasd fingers crossed they will do you, then. Like you say it’s a vicious circle, you stop being able to be “well enough” for the op… hope it goes ahead!

Vgtasd · 03/10/2023 14:29

Just an update everyone Dr rang this morning, they are proceeding with the op on Saturday, so relieved xx

@Vgtasd Wonderful news. Best of luck!

GCAcademic · 03/10/2023 14:33

I was told, when my hb was 90, that it would need to be 100 for them to perform my hysterectomy. They would have done a blood transfusion if it had been too low.

Vgtasd · 03/10/2023 15:14

@LulaK thanks appreciate the good wishes xx
