Cervical Ectropion

Hi,
Just looking for a bit of reassurance! I had some spotting the morning after sex a few days ago. Fresh pink blood. Not very much, lasted about half an hour.

Just visited the GP and she’s had a look, told me my cervix is still a little bloody but it doesn’t look too worrisome! She said I may have cervical ectropion, although she can’t see any of the cervical cells on the ‘outside’.

I’m not on the pill, last smear was 18 months ago, all clear. Dr is writing a letter to the hospital to get their advice if they want to see me for more investigations or not.

Has anyone had ectropion but it wasn’t actually seen on an exam? I’m worrying that if it can’t actually be seen, then it’s not ectropion at all and something more sinister!

Thanks!

Hey!

About 6 years ago now I had a bit of spotting during my cycle so I went to the doctors. She diagnosed cervical erosion. I went for a cervical screening not long after and the nurse said she could see it also.
Yesterday, I went for my 3 yearly cervical screening and the nurse said she couldn't see the erosion/ectropian but there was a tiny bit of blood. So, that got me worried too! I'm thinking why was there blood ect! I don't get spotting anymore. Anyway got the waiting game for results now.
But the reason I replied to your message was because I was also seen to have some blood when no erosion this time could be seen. But, I did have one! Have you an update on your situation?

Hi,
Thanks for replying. Sorry to hear you’re in the same position too!

I’ve got no update, still waiting to hear back from gp as to whether I will be referred to hospital or not. They said it can be up to 6 weeks to hear back…..

I had this, it was absolutely fine. They just get you in for a check to make sure that's all it is as it's completely harmless, just doesn't look nice. Then they can do a little procedure to get the inside cells off the outside but if you're like me and anxious you don't HAVE to have it done. I got there and they confirmed it and I asked if I could just skip the next bit and they said it was my choice as it wouldn't detrimentally affect me at all.

Cervical ectropian is extremely common, and it's just a side effect of normal hormonal cycles.

Usually nothing is required to be done as it generally resolves itself, but if its causing frequent spotting or unscheduled bleeding then the cells can be treated at Colposcopy.

I honestly wouldn't be concerned about an ectropian- I'm a sexual health nurse and see it frequently.

I’ve just been to doctors today as I had a little spotting after sex. The next day after. She said my cervix is red and sending me to gynaecology she mentioned cauterisation etc but I was still trying to dressed so I didn’t take it all in. I’m 47 and from what I’ve since googled it’s more seen in younger woman, pregnant woman and woman on birth control. I’m none of them ? Should I be worried ?

Hi Nikki 360,
sorry to hear you’re going through the same.

I’ve had a response from gynaecology and they’re not going to see me but assume it’s cervical Ectropion.
I’ve asked the doctor to see me again, my concern is when she looked at my cervix she couldn’t actually see any cervical Ectropion, she’s said she’s just assuming that’s what’s caused the bleeding.

At least you have been referred. Hopefully you will be seen soon!
