Hysteroscopy advice - has anyone had one?

I need a hysteroscopy to check unexplained bleeding. There was nothing immediately worrying on the scan but my womb lining is a bit thick. I don't know if I'm peri or post menopausal because I take the mini pill (part of trying to balance my hormones after similar episodes before).

I've got to have it under general anaesthetic (couldn't cope when they tried to take a sample without).

Has anyone had one under general? I'm really scared it will be painful afterwards - think I have a curved cervix - and that they'll damage my womb by poking about.

I'm also worried about the wait. They said they couldn't see any signs of cancer, but there was a chance of pre-cancerous changes. I waited 6 weeks instead of 2 for my first appointment. Do I look at getting it privately (it's an option) or is the NHS the best bet for this kind of thing?

And the cheerful doctor said even if they do find anything dodgy, I can have a hysterectomy. Like it was an easy option...

I had one due to a thickened endometrium and irregular bleeding when I was 48. They warned me beforehand that some women find it painful and that I could wait for a GA appointment if I wanted.

I decided to go ahead with the normal appointment and it was painful, but not unbearably so. With hindsight, I'm glad I didn't wait as it did find womb cancer and after that everything happened pretty speedily and I had a full hysterectomy within a month of the hysteroscopy.

Hope you're okay now FlowersFlowers

Update: The NHS has come through. I was expecting to wait for ages and was looking at going private but now have a date for the first week of October. (Obviously I'm pleased not to have to wait, but then a little voice started worrying they were rushing me through because they think there is something bad.)

So definitely under GA because of my tilted cervix and the fact the neck of my womb is too closed to get the speculum(??) in.

I think I'll have the Mirena fitted too, though still doubtful. (Also they said they wouldn't change my HRT until they had the biopsy results but they wouldn't have them on the day of the op either...)

@janicegarvey Glad they weren't too worried. And hope you get an appointment as quickly as me

I'm so pleased I started this thread. It's genuinely helping me deal with all this.

Thank you xx

That is great you have got your appointment so soon

I've been told 3-6 months 😩😩

I'm actually considering going private with the few cancer stories I'm reading on here but it's £2500

Just wanted to update that I have my date for the hysteroscopy

It's next week and I'm absolutely shitting it

I'm not even scared of the procedure tbh, although it doesn't sound great 😩 I'm scared in case anything untoward is found and I'm also scared of the wait afterwards 😔

I had one. No pain at all after. A bit of bleeding and felt kind of low and sorry for myself but that's probably expected. Healed a lot quicker than they said. The bleeding stopped in 2 days . Good luck

Sorry just realised it's an old thread

That's really good I'm glad was okay for you

Can I ask why you had one if you don't mind please ? Mine is due to womb lining thickening

@janicegarvey exactly the same, thick lining, plus bulky uterus and abnormal bleeding.

Everything was fine in the end. a few things were found so I was scared but they were just small polyps , not what was causing my bleeding so they decided it's hormonal and gave me mirena (can't spell it) coil which seems to have stopped my abnormal bleeding. Remember there's soooo many non scary things it can be . I know it's hard as I was Googling everything and my symptoms fit with all the bad ones but turned out to be non of them.

Glad that everything was okay for you !

I know that when I had my ultrasound no polyps were seen so hopefully that is still the case 🤞🏻
