Is my anatomy unique? (Warning urinogenital)

Has anyone else ever experienced this and does it have a name?

I'm an overweight and postmenopausal mum. Occasionally I have urinary incontinence of a really weird kind. It happens mostly when I'm asleep, but once or twice after sitting too long on a hard surface.

Instead of just flowing out, wee gets blocked from leaving my body and ends up going up into my uterus. I'm then stuck, knowing if I try to get up, it will gush out uncontrollably.

It's awful to wake up feeling like a disaster waiting to happen. The last times it has happened, I have been able to shuffle horizontally to get a towel, which I can bundle in place to soak it up, before heading to the shower.

It's embarrassing and depressing when it happens, especially if there are family members around. I dare n't move.

Am I the only woman to have had this?

I have incontinence related to bladder issues (long term interstitial cystitis and lupus) and personally that doesn’t happen to me but you should definitely see your doctor - they can examine you and tell you if there’s a physical cause and hopefully reassure you. There are also medications etc you can try which might help - internal oestrogen like Ovestin, hrt, solifenacin etc etc.

Into your uterus? Have you had scans?

or do you mean it backs up into your vagina?
I believe there is a malformation where the urethra empties into the vagina, but I would have thought that would have been picked up if you’ve had kids?

have you ever paid attention or checked where your wee comes from?

I have it sometimes backing up into my vagina and doing what you describe. I am waiting for urodynamics tests but my trust still "havent started them up again since Covid"... so will bo doubt take two or three years 🙄

Sorry, of course I meant vagina 🙄 I do know my bits, honestly!

Most of the time everything works as it should, especially if I keep up pelvic floor exercises.

Just sometimes, if I need a wee desperately in my sleep, I will be clenching but it's as if I'm passing it, but nothing comes out. Until I get up and whoosh!

I've Googled it, but never found it described.

Women's incontinence is a bit of a neglected issue anyway, even though it's so common

Are the tests for this issue alone, or for other urinary issues?

Did it happen before children? I am wondering if you have a fistula (a tear between you urethra and your vagina).

For difficulty starting stream of urine and the fact it comes out in spurts, not a heavy flow.
