I had an ovarian cyst many years ago.
It suddenly started growing rapidly which is how I noticed it as I have a flat stomach area.
The consultant has me going for scans every few weeks to monitor the size. I was told it was unlikely to be cancerous but didn't want it developing into an unsightly bulge.
I was then called in and told that it would have to be removed as it has now reached the size (can't remember what) that they like to remove them once they start growing rapidly.
I was booked in for six weeks time and I didn't have to go for any more scans.
On the day of the op I was surprised that I didn't have a pre op scan.
We had agreed that he would also carry out an endometrial ablation whilst I was under the anaesthetic which was the best thing ever but that's a whole different story!
When I came to, I was a bit disorientated and surprised to see my consultant hovering over me looking agitated and behaving nervously.
He explained that when he went to remove the cyst it had shrunk. Gone.
The ablation had been a success.
It took awhile dow it to all sink in.
I had taken two weeks off work because of the anaesthetic which had turned out to be completely unnecessary as the ablation could have been carried out without a general aesthetic.
I then did my own research and sound that it's quite common for ovarian cysts to shrink and disappear of their own accord.
A scan before the anaesthetic would have spotted that the cyst had gone and I complained about it but it fell on deaf ears.
Just be aware of that and ask for a scan before any operation.
