Has anyone done a random health check?

Just wondered what people's opinions on it are if they have done one and whether they thought it was worth it

What type are you interested in and where at?
Some surgeries and pharmacies do an nhs health check but it’s focus is on CVD and lifestyle changes to reduce the risk.

NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74.

It's the every woman check I was looking at, but interested to hear from people who have had one.

NHS says it's for over 40, plus who knows how long the wait could be. I don't consider this as necessary, just something I'd like to do so I don't mind paying.

Title was supposed to say randox not random!

I do these at work for the over 40's. NHS health checks. They're very basic and generally looking to identify those at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and get them on a statin.
Weight, BP, lifestyle questions, blood test. I would get one done simply for the bloods alone. I must pick up problems for 2-3 out of every ten people I do - unknown diabetics, thyroid problems, high cholesterol etc. Seemingly fit and healthy people with no symptoms.
Best investment though is to buy your own BP machine for about twenty quid and check it at home on an ad hoc basis. You'll get lower readings that way anyway.
They're not a priority for us but we do get paid for them. Ring up and ask.

@cptartapp thanks for your reply! I'm not 40 yet though so don't think I'd qualify

I did one similar to the randox one when I turned 50

They are good and test for a lot of things. The only issue is that they see you in isolation. You can't possibly give them your entire medical history so a lot of the tests have no context if you know what I mean.

I'm quite interested in this. Would like to get a better idea of things like thyroid etc etc without looking like a hypochondriac at my own GP. I've had a few symptoms which could be peri menopause also so it would be nice to get more info.

Anonposter123 · 12/08/2023 21:09

@YearsofYears
Yes same here! Routine bloods I'm told are ok. But I'd like more of a break down to be honest which I don't get from gp

It really changed the meaning of your question, I definitely wouldn’t have suggested the nhs one if the title hadn’t been changed by predicted text 😂

Anonposter123 · 12/08/2023 23:31

@NewUserNameSaved
Yes predictive text can be very annoying sometimes 🤣🤣
But thank you for taking the time to respond

I had the women check with Nuffield hospital and it was quite thorough tbh.

Anonposter123 · 14/08/2023 19:27

@Georgiemack did it give you any interesting insights? You don't have to share any details

@Anonposter123
What do you mean? What tests etc?

AssetTag22 · 14/08/2023 20:29

I had one through work. Half hour with nurse; half hour with a GP. Most came back all within range apart from weight (1 stone overweight) but am working on it. BP, weight, blood glucose, HbAC1, cholesterol and a few others tested. Was pleased as I was 2 stone heavier a few mths ago and am sure the tests were better because of weight loss.

ButterfliesandMoths · 14/08/2023 20:30

I had the nhs health check at my doctors surgery. Had blood test for various things including diabetes, thyroid, cholesterol, found out I had high cholesterol. Nurse checked family history. Height and weight taken. Advised to lose about half stone, as a little over weight and it would help with the cholesterol. Definitely worth having if offered.

AssetTag22 · 14/08/2023 20:32

This is what I had tested. Was very worthwhile.

Anonposter123 · 14/08/2023 20:43

@Georgiemack did it confirm any suspicions you may have had before you did it? Or did the results give you indications of things to look out for / change going forward?

@AssetTag22 @ButterfliesandMoths
Thank you both for your responses!

I had a health MOT through Bluecrest - I only did it because I saw it on offer with Wowcher!!

It included an ECG - this showed a significant abnormality. My GP then pursued this further with more tests and it turns out I had borderline heart failure!! I now take daily meds which have greatly improved my heart.

Overall I think these checks are definitely worth it as they allow you to proactively address issues that might not come to light until they are critical otherwise.

I’m 58 and had an MRI last year because I’d been getting headaches. I knew it wouldn’t be the first thing the NHS did and I decided to have a full body scan. Put my mind at rest re dementia too.
